Looking for a tv to be used with virgin media + service so a HD box with hdmi and the occasional use with an xbox via via scart or hdmi (if i use the elite) and maybe the wii on scart. I understand theres 1080i and 1080p tvs but as i have virgin tv is it better with 1080p or 1080i. I was thinking of possibly a 32 inch or less, we're about 6 - 8 foot form the tv.

Would i be right in saying the bigger the screen then its benficial to get 1 with 1080p so would smaller screens not really benfit form 1080p.

Anything I should be looking for in terms of specs ? Possibly looking to spend £350 - £400.

Your budget would get you a 40-42 inch TV if you want. Viewing distances are subjective, but I'd have no problems with HD programmes at that distance on that size of screen.
The specs you post above should be available on any TV these days really. Don't use an XBox 360 on SCART if you can help it, that's a waste. Any bigger TV (you MUST check all, especially 32s) should be 1080p. Broadcast TV only goes up to 1080i in this country anyway AFAIK. I would say FreeviewHD would be nice, but you might save money not going for it since you have Virgin Media. You're likely to only get 1 SCART socket these days too.
  • Maybe you could use this to narrow your choices a bit and when you have 2 or 3 models on your shortlist you could post them here? It's always a bit easier when you already have something in mind... http://www.otest.co.uk/tv-video-dvd/2651/televisions.html

I'm very happy with this 32" Sony
  • Go for 1080p make sure it has basic freeview at least as a backup.

Be careful some 32 " tvs and smaller operate on 1366 x 768 which is mid way between the older 720 (upscaled 720 into 16:9?) and the 1080 and can cause some connection problems with certain devices.

Get as many HDMI ports as you can.

Certainly go bigger than 32, mum has a 37 and watches from the same distance. How big is the room and what space do you have? Whilst you could go bigger they do start to jump in physical size a bit, overhanging old tables/video cabinets etc.

Well iv'e had a play with that link that was posted up and these are what its come up with that are in the price range :

Sony KDL-32CX523 some good reviews there

    Toshiba Regza 37RL853B

    Panasonic viera TX-L32E3B

    Samsung LE32B550

I think 37 inch would be too big for the distance we are from the tv so possibly 32inch would be better.

Ill double check the distance we currently sit.
  • Judging by the reviews, the Sony seems to be the better deal, doesn't it? Especially for the features. But I guess you'll be checking them out in person before you make a decision, or are you planning on ordering it online without taking a look at them first? In any case, the three of them look like solid choices, even if none of them have glowing reviews when it comes to image quality, but we all know how spoiled reviewers are by their jobs... they normally have an eye for things that us mere mortals probably would never notice ;)
