How can I get internet on my lap top?

Hi Folks

I can get internet on my mobile phone and was just wondering if I can get the internet on my laptop by connecting my mobile phone to the lap top.

Is that possible?

Thanks in advance for your response

depends on the phone , if you have the right cable and software and your network suports tethering

but be warned it could cost you a small fortune ( if you have a net bundle on your phone it wont cover you using your phone as a modem

    Hi jamespir

Many thanks for your reply. I am not very technical so can you explain what does network support tethering means and what do you mean by I won't be covered if I use the mobile as a modem?

    thanks in advance.

Why would I get charged 10p per mb? Wouldn't it be just a matter of connecting the phone to the lap top?

    Thanks
  • Personally I wouldn't do it with a contract phone as the networks generally don't like it but I use my PAYG phone this way.

My phone has Bluetooth and I created a "Dial Up Networking" connection on the computer.

If you can provide phone model and operating system details then it would be possible to be more specific in your case.

    Hi Folks

    Many thanks for your reply.

Just for your info, I am thinking of getting the iphone 4 on contract. So, I presume it is possible to get internet on that phone and connect it up to the lap top, so that I can access the internet from the laptop?

Would there be any additional charges that I would need to pay?

    Thanks

tethering is the term used when you use a mobile phone as your modem.

But to load a page from ebay on 6" screen will use about 64k of data. Now on a 15.4" will use anything from 2 or 3mb to maybe 40mb depending on photos and content. When you only have 500mb you can eat up your data bundle pretty fast. some newworks can charge £1 per mb after you have used up your data bundle

get your self a dongle from your network provider. They can give you up to 10gb and its going to be a lot cheaper

because it would connect to the net using the phone as a modem

almost all networks include tethering in their data allowance now, ie your mobile contract comes with 1GB data, that 1GB can be used for either phone data or tethering, mind you when you use the 1GB up you will be charged extra.

3 mobile, vodafone and o2 all allow the data allowance to be used for tethering, they also have different add-ons that will give you more data specifically for tethering, so you wouldn't have to buy a dongle or mifi device.

I still think a dongle, if the op is going to use his phone as his MAIN internet source. 1Gb is ok as a back up. but I think as a main its not enough and 2 easy to go over
