  • I suppose I can stop the Orchid dialling mobiles if I can remember how!

Do all mobiles numbers begin with 07

Thats my problem, I want to bar calls to mobiles altogether as even using 18185 she's run up over £12 this month, I know it doesn't sound a lot ,but we are on a very tight budget and the bill is usually under £3

I can't see a way of doing it without giving up the orchid dialler
By the sound of it, you have an Orchid V2.

Getting BT to bar calls to international, national and mobile numbers and changing to a V4 would allow you to bar calls to any numbers you want (and, so you would still be able to call mobiles when necessary, you could bypass the bar yourself by dialling 121 and then manually inserting the 18185 prefix).

The problem though is most teenagers are techno-savvy these days and she may work out that bypass method for herself (or how to use one of the 0844 gateway providers to make such calls).

Why not just make it clear that, if she makes a call, she pays?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Thanks, that was the plan but unfortunately, whilst she has left school she only works one evening a week (thats a whole different problem!) and I am finding it impossible to get any contributions at all.

My budget won't allow for the calls at all, so I have to stop them.

Is the V4 simple to set up, it should pay for itself if I got one.

Luckily, there's no way she'd work her way round it!

Some people (the more computer-literate) find the programming quite easy, others don't.

You specify your initial programming requirements when you order (don't forget to mention MSE so you get 20% discount) but can amend your program at any time by accessing your own CW Client account online.

However, even of you also used the BT barring (so her using 1280 to route a call via BT would fail), I don't think she'd be beaten for long - there are so many gateway providers offering alternative ways to call mobiles (see the MSE UK Callchecker).

I'd say you getting free evening and weekend UK 01/02 calls would help (it'd certainly pay for - or go a long way towards paying for - the call barring you need to get BT to implement). As you have a BT line, I'd suggest you signed up for Primus Saver Option 2 CPS. There's no monthly fee and, as you already use 18185, using that for your weekday daytime UK 01/02 calls and Primus for your evening and weekend UK 01/02 calls is a no-brainer.

  • Thank you very much for that Heinz.
I appreciate the time you've taken,

I'll sign up for the Primus now.
  • Sorry Heinz, back again!

I've ordered a V4 and signed up for the Primus saver.

I've asked then to programme it as you suggested and to bar mobiles.

I'm certain that she won't realise it can be bypassed, so I'm not worried about that.

I just wanted to check that I don't need to bar mobiles with BT also.

The more I've thought about it, the more confused I've got!!
  • The most obvious way to bypass is to unplug the dialler. Even technophobes (like me) could work that one out!

She'd have to know that I had one and find it first! LOL

If you only have one phone socket and can hide the Orchid so she doesn't know it exists, you won't need to bar calls with BT as well.

Bear in mind though that the override code for an Ochid is 121 - so using a 121 prefix will send a call out on Primus.

Similarly, the Orchid will allow through any call with a 1280 prefix - and that will bypass Primus and send the call out on BT.

What I'm really saying is make sure she doesn't find out about the Orchid!
