Unauthorised Transaction on credit card = fraud. What to do?

Options
Received credit card statement this month, and am surprised to see there's a transaction on there for £89.97 to a company that I don't recognise.

First call is to the credit card company to find out who the company that have charged the transaction are. They provided me the details as well as their website address, and they appear and seem to be all genuine. I contact them, and they are unable to locate any order placed using my card.

Further phone calls are placed between Bank of Scotland - credit card company - to get extra reference details to help locate the order, and the company involved. Company can only find one transaction on that day for that amount, which is to somebody else.

Bank of Scotland have not been very helpful, but finally they advise to pass the information to their fraud team to have it looked into. Fraud team come back saying the secure 3D was used on the payment, and they are unable to do anything.

Where do I stand on this? I've never given my details to anyone, and have not received anything from this company. Please advise.

    what was the website
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Had thought about not publicising it, as they didn't appear to do anything wrong. But will let people judge for themselves.

  • Dophinfitness may (or may not) be entirely genuine. Somewhat could have bought something from them using your card. You need to contact your bank and dolphinfitness will loose the £89.97 transaction immediately (effecting their score with their merchant bank) and you will get your money back in some six weeks. Have been there, have done it.

The bank are saying they can't refund the transaction to the card, as the secure 3D payment thing was used online to make the payment. They are effectively saying it was me that has made the transaction.

This is why I hate these "SecureCode"/"Verified by VISA" and similar systems. The banks trumpetted them as an additional security layer for the customer, but in actual fact all they do is allow the credit card company to absolve themselves of all responsibility for fraudulent transactions.
They don't benefit the customer in any way.
I managed to avoid setting this up on any of my cards for a long while, but they are now so widely-used it's now almost impossible to avoid if you want to use your card on-line.
    It worries me a lot.
  • I had a fraudulant transaction on my egg card a few years back which was authorised by secure3d. Egg's automated system rang me and asked if it was genuine I said no, but they still added to my bill. I rang and complained and said it was a fraudulent transaction, they said it was secure3d authorised but I insisted and they agreed to investigate. After a few months it was finally sorted with alot of hassle. Secure3d isn't secure if someone obtains your card details, they only need to find your date of birth to reset your secure3d password. This information can be found out fairly easily and my secure3d password was changed.

Banks have to prove you made the transaction, if you insist it was fraudulent. So insist and good luck.

I switched to mainly using amex where possible, since they dont have such a stupid and pointless system.

Had you enrolled the card in Verified by Visa?

When you enrol, it will provide you a link so you can sign in and see all the transactions you have done in a 3D secure environment.

I don't think so. Is that the thing you have to sign up for when they make you set up the password?

Okay, the company have located the order and provided me the details of where the order was delivered to. The phone number on the order is unobtainable. Have I done anything wrong? Do I have the right to claim my money from either Bank of Scotland or dolphin fitness, as at the end of the day I've paid for something that I've never got.
  • Well Dolphin Fitness have done lots wrong here by providing you details of the customer; goes against DPA

I dont think so. The order is placed under the op payment information. So op have all the rights to know where the order is gone or delivery address.
