Foil oil fired boiler insulation jacket

Our oil fired boiler is out in the garage. We had it serviced yesterday and the man told us that a foil jacket would save us oil but keeping the heat in thus switching off quicker etc. Im curious with the likely low temperatures we are expected to receive, is is a good idea to get this foil cover now? Or is it better to keep it off in winter?

    I don't understand your dilemma.

Keeping heat IN the boiler rather than losing it to heating the outside cold air will save you money summer, autumn and winter. The only time it wouldn't save you money would be if the outside air tenperature was actually higher than the temperature of the boiler!

I'm a bit confused by this idea too, I would expect the cold weather to be the time you're using the boiler most frequently and that you would want to make the most of the insulation during this time. Is it that you're worried about the temperature in the garage getting too low if the boiler is releasing less heat in there?

I was thinking the same as you guys but I read on here some people take theirs off in the winter to raise the temperature in the garage

Well, OK, if you want to keep your car all snug and warm then yes - remove the boiler insulation. Better still, install a couple of decent-sized double rads!

Cost you a fortune to heat your garage though.

Maybe use the boiler insulation (plus a bit more from B&Q) to wrap around the 4 walls of the garage (plus the roof of course) so the garage stays the same temperature as the boiler heats up to......

Do you mean the double rads? Or the insulation?

'Cos a plmber won't do the insulation - you'll need an odd job-man for that (and yes, the hyphen is definately in the right place there!)
