^just read the packet. Avoid use with aluminium, laquered and varnished surfaces, and drinking water (well durr!). Also warns it may be an irritant undiluted or in very high concentrates. I've used it for years without a problem although I do use non bio as bio irritates my skin.

Ah, yes, sorry - I didn't know it was possible to get soda crystals specifically for washing. I was referring to the bog standard soda crystals used to clear drains/plugholes

We use vinegar in our washes, the towels are now soft after years of hard towels (hard water area!)

    What kind of vinegar?

    White vinegar, I suspect.

However, I have never worked out if it should be put in the drum or in the detergent drawer.
  • White vinegar (although some people on the Old Style boards do use malt.)

Some people put it in the fabric softener drawer, but I have put it in the drum also.

I think that you might be confusing soda crystals with caustic soda which is for cleaning drains. Please don't put that in your wash!
I use soda crystals in every wash and use vinegar in place of conditioner (white or malt, it doean't matter, and you won't smell like a chip shop!) Clothes are soft and I don't get a sticky, black conditioner drawer anymore:) Check out the old-style board for loads of info on it.

Is the vinegar used instead of or in conjunction with conditioner? And secondly how much should one use.

Instead of conditioner and a small cap of vinegar (I fill up halfway to the top of the washing liquid bottle top measure).

Ive got soft fluffy towels by drying them on the line and finishing them off in tumble dryer for 10 mins,I never use fabric softner on towels because it prevents them soaking the water up.......

I use an eggcup of soda crystals (buy from Homebargains or Savers only59p, same as in Tesco) along with 50mls of washing liquid.
The soda crystals soften the water so you need less detergent and therefore less to rinse out.
I use a cupful of white vinegar instead of conditioner in final rinse. I always shake all washing before hanging in or out.
You will see the benefit after items have been washed a couple of times.
  • Can anyone let me know where you can buy white vinegar in bulk? I can only find it in a spray bottle in my local shops.
