Slow brand new laptop

I bought a sony vaio from the amazon clearance link on here.
Its like new - but is very slow.
It has windows 7 on and I have downloaded office 2010 and avast, thats all. But its slower than my old desktop thats 8 years old.

has it been slow since immediately bought? or after a couple wks usage ? download Malwarebytes too and run a scan. is the boot up time slow too or just the response time when using ? what's the spec of the machine ?

If it is slow to the point of it being unusable, I would contact Amazon. I know that laptops can slow down very quickly, but it shouldn't be like it straight away. Could be some problem with the laptop itself, definitely worth checking out.

Has it come pre-installed with many programs, or trials of programs? If so, many of these often unnecessarily start up automatically with the computer and take up resources. Preventing non-essential programs/services from starting automatically could help with the problem.

with that spec it should be pretty rapid. There is some bloat in the hjt log, but if you've already got a returns #....

They have accepted it as a returns, even in ms office - excel - just simple things like cut and paste take 20 seconds just to get the list up from clicking the mouse. So takes a minute to cut and paste anything! Also the screen sometimes has a fault and only displayes half a page the top half is blank? So I guess there something wrong.
