Problems after analogue switchover

Hello all,

I wonder if you could help with a problem.

We have a analogue TV - hope thats the correct term, not a digital one I mean.
A freeview box and a video recorder, if thats relevant all connected via scarts.
Aerial - brand new June 2008

Everything worked fine before the switchover, we could if we wanted watch the first five channels BBC1, BBC2 etc through the digibox or through the ordinary TV.

Now, since the switchover, the first five channels have been bearly watchable. For instance watching a one hour program last night, I had to rescan for the channels 3 times. That re-tune would last for maybe 10 mins then the picture would freeze and pixalate.

Or a seperate problem is that the movement of the people is in slow motion on the picture but the sound is fine.

All of the freeview channels are perfect and always have been.

We have tried another borrowed freeview box, but it didn't make any difference.

We only have one TV in the house and one aerial point, this has one joint in it, but apart from that runs directly to the roof aerial.


I wonder if anyone has any ideas, or could point us in the right direction.

I don't quite understand. If your area has completed switchover, then all the 5 analogue channels will have been switched off, and the only channels you can now get are via Freeview-that includes the 5 former analogue ones.
Yet you say 'all the Freeview channels are perfect'?

Hi, Yes we completed switchover on the 5th and 24th September IIRC - the month is correct, I do remember that.

Sorry, when I said 'all the Freeview channels are perfect', I meant the ones after the original 5 analogue channels ie ITV2, BBC Three, BBC Four and so on.

As you say the only channels I can get now are view Freeview which includes the 5 former analogue channels, yet these former 5 channels do not broadcast through the freeview box, but did fine before the switchover.

That is because they have been switched off, that is why it is called the switchover.

I do tend to understand what switchover means, but thanks anyway


So my next question is what else do I need to change or buy in order to watch BBC 1, BBC 2, ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5.

Possibly what has happened is:

On switchover they increase the transmitter power, perhaps you are picking up the 5 programmes on Ch 1-5 from a different transmitter which is further away but just strong enough to be picked up by your freeview box.

Other programmes picked up are given Ch numbers in the 900 range. look at your programme guide to see if there are any in that area for you to watch.

Be nice if you said where you are. Switchovers are usually wednesdays. eg Emley Moor and Sutton Coldfield were the 7th and 21st September. When I scan (off Emley) I can pick up Belmont as well. So I had to let the box scan the lower frequencies with the aerial unplugged then it didn't pick up the Belmont transmitters as they aren't very strong. It will automatically assign BBC1 - CH5 off the first transmitter carrying those channels with duplicates in the 800's.
