Got my PAC code from 02, now what?

I have never done this before so advice needed please.
My contract with 02 is due to end Feb 16th so I requested my PAC code on Jan 16th and it has arrived in a long-winded letter.
I have a brand new Vodafone PAYG sim card ready to use and wish to port my number to that.
Can I port the number now?
How long does it take to become active on the new network?
Will I have to activate the Voda Sim first?
Will 02 cancel the contract when Voda take over my number?
Shall I cancel my direct debit?
Sorry for so many questions but I have been with 02 for 6 years and due to their recent unhelpfullness, I have decided to leave them but want to keep my number.

Is this a typo... if not then I don't understand. Please explain what you are trying to do.
Otherwise you can activate your new Vodafone sim and give them you PAC code at the same time. Vodafone will give you a date when your number will be moved over from O2 to your Vodafone PAYG sim. Thats the date when your contract with O2 ends.
HTHI think my monitor's running out of ink....0 -
yeh sorry, it should read Vodafone.
So, you are effectively saying that as soon as Vodafone take over my number, I am no longer under contract to 02 even if it is before the 16th Feb?0 -
Correct.
Good luck with the switch.I think my monitor's running out of ink....0
