Vodafone iPhone unlock

I recently purchased an iPhone 4 from eBay. It was advertised as unlocked but turns out it is locked to Vodafone. I've contacted Vodafone and asked how to unlock. They've said it needs the details of the original owner. After contacting the guy I purchased it off from eBay, he's informed me he bought it from a lady who can no longer trace. However, he also informs me the iPhone was an upgrade for the original owner and he purchased it from her still in the sealed box and unregistered on iTunes. My question now is, will this handset be registered to the guy I purchased it from eBay because he was the first person to register it on iTunes?

If not what the hell can I do to get it unlocked????

Thanks,
Richard.

I'd be thinking send it back.

Vodafone won't unlock it for him or you only the original custormer, and not knowing who the details of who you bought a £500 phone from sounds a little fishy. They will only deal with the original customer regarless of who used it first or not.

You may be able to do a restore and it may then unlock it to then lock to the first sim card you use, but it's easy for someone to then claim it's stolen and claim on insuracne leaving you with a blocked phone.

It may be a bargain and completly legit but its setting enough warning bells off I'd be suspicious.
