Hi Sewerside
I just rang EDF and they said no cos I live in a flat .. Tesco said maybe when I said I was ground floor with 3 flats above me - but as there are 14 flats in total in our block they said no
Anyone know anything else about free insulation for small block of flats?0 -
No cavity in my wall
But there is 2" space behind the plasterboard.
It makes sense to fill that with insulation....or is there a snag ??
(Had differing views from different builders.)0 -
Blocks of flats are very time consuming
The surveyor has to be able to access all of them on the day of survey and so do the fitters.
A signature is required from all flat owners although any over 70 will get it free
All must be done on the same day and any block over 3 storeys require scaffolding or a cherry picker as a minimum so chances are slim getting all done free by your gas supplier0 -

I've just spent 20 minutes reading all the info about the insulation offers and thought brilliant - something to give the purses of those of us who work for a living a bit of a break for once! I then went on the EDF website to complete the application to find that an offer that was supposedly open to ALL and only limited by whether your home was suitable WAS ACTUALLY ONLY AVAILABLE IF YOU WERE ON BENEFITS!!! What an absolute waste of time!! I'm so disappointed - MSE what happened to your good advice?!0 -

I don't see the bit where it says you only get it if on benefits. And I've got the surveyor coming round on Monday - when I booked it I wasn't asked anything about being on benefits. And I'm not, so if I should be they'll be having a wasted trip.0 -
I thought I would share my experiences of cavity wall insulation, the use of which I am an advocate.
I live on the IW. We moved into our present detached 1934ish house in 1987. As soon as we could afford it, in 1991, we had cavity wall insulation installed, it cost £525. What would that be at todays prices? A bargain, it's more than paid for itself.
It was done by Aston Insulation. I've had them come back a couple of times. The first time was to top-up a small section of wall and the second time was when I did some work to a wall in the kitchen which raised the height of the cavity. They filled both of these areas for free without a quibble. It is Rock Wool and there have never been any problems with damp and only the inside wall has a damp proof course.
Before the work was done I removed all the air bricks and bricks at the corners of the house and scraped out the cavities so that the dpc wasn't bridged. I also removed bits of broken brick which had lodged in and bridged, the cavity. These were the result of a previous owner's attempts at DIY, where holes had been beaten through the walls. Before replacing the air bricks I stuffed fibre glass insulation into the cavity around the aperture to stop the Rock Wool blocking up the vents, thereby preventing air ventilating the floor. They use bristle brushes these days.
In our previous house we had polystyrene bead fill. A glue was injected along with the beads which was supposed to hold them all together. It wasn't always successful though. There were instances when all the beads flowed out when a window was removed! That's why Rock Wool was used this time.

DEFINITELY NOT only open to those on benefits.
Those who are on benefits get free insulation as the installation costs are fully supported through the CERT funding, so a slightly different funding model (same outcome, but different back office route).0 -
Astons were a great firm based in Cadnam and had a depot on the IOW.
Sadly closed down in 2008.
Their cadnam office is now owned by A and M insulations and have installed many of my properties over the last 3 yrs.
They have a couple of really good fitters and I have several customers who will be happy to provide references.
They can even fit your loft before Xmas if you happen to be in BH or SO and PO postcode .0 -
Had a call from SIG Energy Management yesterday and their surveyor is coming on 13th Dec. for (in my case) cavity wall only.
As I said in my previous post if it`s entirely free, I`ll have it. :T
Otherwise
no deal. :mad:0
