I've had my walls checked and unfortunately they are not suitable for cavity wall insulation (1930's house). Does anyone know if there is a subsidy for the external cladding-type insulation or internal? The roof is well insulated, I hasten to add.
    Thanks

My mother is over 80 years old, so I tried to get the free insulation for her.

Her two storey bungalow has solid walls. NOT covered.

There is a central loft area, but then there is a whole load of eaves space which are above ground floor rooms. I can access the eaves by crawling through it to lay cables.

One surveyor will do the central loft, but not the eaves space.
They will not give me the insulation, so I can do the eaves myself.

One surveyor refused to do any of it, because the loft space is not high enough.

Finally, I went for the central loft only option, and got my builders to do the eaves space. We also lined the roof and 1st floor loft room sides with 80mm Kingspan.

I am also replacing the internal plaster on the solid walls with thermal plaster. We scraped off the old internal plaster down to the brick, then applied the Thermo-Por to about 30mm. Would have gone to 40mm, but need to keep the window sills. The rooms with the new thermal plaster are definitely better than before.

If we weren't renovating, I would have just done the loft insulation, which would have helped, but compared to what was needed, it's probably 1% of the time and money we put in.

It's like the Boiler Scrappage Scheme. They pay out £400, but I ended up spending £4,000 for one system, so it generated about £700 in VAT for the tax man. This means George Osborne was £300 up on the deal!

As soon as I received the weekly MSE email on Wednesday I went to the EDF website and applied for "free insulation".

Today I had a letter from EDF to say my name has been passed onto the installer for my area, a company called SIG Energy Management.
They will contact me in the next 30 days to arrange an appointment for the insulation options for my home.

My loft is OK so it`s the CWI I will be interested in.
If it`s free as it`s supposed to be, then I`ll have it done.
If there`s any cost involved then I wont.

My initial reaction to the email offer was that they just wanted to get your name and for various reasons it wouldn`t be entirely free and there would be a cost involved.
Call me cynical. but we will see.

Incidently I was due to have it done free by B Gas last December but due to the bad weather it was cancelled.
By the time another date had been arranged I had switched energy supplier because of BG`s massive price increases.

Same here 2010, applied to EDF after the email and have today got the same letter saying my installer will be SIG Energy Management (Plymouth).
We have 100mm of loft insulation but no cavity wall insulation, so hopefully it will all be as free as they say it is.

There`s a lot of people sounding like the World owes them a favour on this thread.
    :money:
  • Does the free insulation apply to second homes? My elderly dad owns a 1960s bungalow in Wales which was left to him by an aunt. His main home is elsewhere. We use it in the holidays, but its empty most of the time. It has no insulation at all (which makes it freezing in winter). Would he qualify for financial help?
  • Just seen tesco now offer external wall insulation at £8000 for a semi
So probably £10k for a detached solid wall house although semis are the most common.
Wonder how many points you will get?

At some point they will have to offer grants for external wall insulation as there are so many houses like this.
  • Your dads home would need to be occupied through out the year by someone over 70 or on benefits normally, but as EDF are doing free insulation as well as Brit Gas and Tesco, then it may be worth giving them a call.
Bungalows usually pass the risk assessment checks as scaffolding isn`t normally required, so as long as its not too exposed and with a dpc and no vents required, then get onto them.

You won't get any loft top up free of charge, but the CWI should be free (subject to any excesses or special access requirements).
