    I have a dilemma...

Me, my housemate and a few friends went out on Monday night. There was 6 of us left in the house yesterday morning and we decided to go out for lunch. I went out first with my housekeys as my housemate was scared to (one of our friends accidentally fell into and broke next-doors fence, this would be funnier if they didn't already hate us!) so I'm not sure who was last to leave but when my housemate came back to try and get ready for work she realised she didn't have her key. Unfortunately, it was still in the lock! As it's a new door, if the key is in the door, you can't open it from outside with a key. We ended up having to call a locksmith which cost £55. I can't really afford to pay towards it BUT feel bad not doing so. Now, I don't really feel like it's my fault as I had my own keys and wasn't the last out.... do you think I should give even just £10 towards it? MrS gave a fiver towards it as housemate and her bf didn't have quite enough cash on them to pay the guy.
I think she kind of blames whoever was actually last out of the door, but why would our friends think about keys in locks or whatever... I just feel bad because she got so upset, but as you say it wasn't down to me. Also, I actually phoned the guy who only cost £55 so she might have ended up paying more if she went with the first person.

I just don't want it to cause problems with us, I hate living in a house where there is tension as I grew up with it and I think home should be a place where you can all relax and not worry! (see i told you i overthink things!)

I completely sympathise with overthinking and not wanting tension at home, but it wasn't your keys that were left behind and you are only responsible for your own keys - plus it wasn't something visible like the door being left open that anyone could have spotted. She should have checked she had her keys and failed to do so, therefore she's responsible for fixing the problem and associated costs. Friends shouldn't be expected to check on stuff like that, I'd have no idea how anybody else's locks worked and wouldn't want to seem nosy by double checking their security. So I don't think you owe her money at all. If you broke a window I doubt she'd be offering to share the costs!

It's odd how people try and shift responsibility in a shared house - we got burgled once, which the police pointed out was done because one of my flatmates used to come in and leave her keys on a table by the door - before she closed the door, so people in the street could see her doing it!, and the table was right next to the letterbox . The police reckoned somebody fished for the keys through the letterbox and let themselves in, then put them back. She decided it was nothing to do with her and all the fault of my other flatmate who must have left the door open! :wall:

  • I have a dilemma...

Have to echo all the previous comments about this - why should you pay anything towards something that only occurred because of something she did? Hells no! That's another few quid off the CC - and she'll only be in a mood because she's feeling daft for causing the problem in the first place I'd bet!

  • Thanks guys... I guess Kerri is right, I wouldnt expect her to pay me if it was the other way around. She came in while I was here, barely even said hello and left again... I had to call her as the neighbours have put in a complaint now about the broken fence (although we admitted to it and said we would get it fixed, and the hubby was perfectly fine about it, so it's the fishwife kicking off) to tell her what i'd said to the letting agent... oh well, we can only see what happens.

Just paid another 1.99 to the debt so that's 218.55 please :) i do have a couple of small things to list on ebay although i won't get much, it's better than nothing, and currently awaiting Hfax to sort out my ppi so hopefully that'll be a little bit too!

Me too please Jakes-Mum, well tomorrow is the big day - I will finally be able to officially make my first payment off the challenge. I feel like I've waited for months not days :rotfl:

I had a fantastic night out last Saturday (for those of you who remember - this thread moves so fast) in my borrowed dress, my new shoes didn't arrive so I had to use my killer heels and they lived up to their name! Because I can't drink Alcohol I only ended up spending £9.50 on the night and £7.50 of this was a professional photo I had done with my closest friend

Everyone seems to be doing so well, I only wish I could think of some stuff to put on fleabay - i really can't imagine what I could possibly sell :o

Haha just looked and only have eight pounds in purse to spend on food because I too can only pay money into the bank in £50's or £100's lol will definitely be an essentials only shop!

It's been a stressful week - both work and family wise but I've stuck to my budget. I've got to go shopping in a minute but I'll try and stick to essentials and I've got some last minute Christmas shopping at the weekend which I think could be a real danger so I must leave my cc's at home otherwise it could be a very dangerous day out

ooooh I can't wait to update your total tomorrow! Glad you had a good and non spendy saturday evening. I did too but got sooooo drunk but in a good way. Hope your week gets better hun xxx
