Sorry for the delay in replying, my Internet decided to play up (I'm having all the luck). Turned out the client had a problem their end so files were sent again and are now fine.0

Yes, it is, as long as you resave it as a .doc. or .docx ,which is not the default. You can change the default in the OO Preferences menu.
One good one out of four suggests to me a file corruption issue-get them resent one file per email.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Unless it is a document you need to edit, get your client to use LibreOffice (OpenOffice is now dead in the water, with only one person still working on it). LibreOffice can load/save in '.doc' format or export as a '.PDF'.Never Knowingly Understood.
