Is 2.5M from TalkTalk on a 24M package Acceptable?

Hi,

I have been with TalkTalk (Tiscali) for 5 years. Originally, on a 8M package with calls and getting on average download speeds of 3.2M. Which I was happy with.

Then, recently, I was upgraded to 24M at no extra cost. I noticed the difference before being officially informed. At first, I was recorded +6M speeds, and then this started to drop over the last 6 months to around 1.2M. After ringing TT to complain, they changed my profile and I started seeing 3.5M at first, now this has dropped to 2.5M.

Is 2.5M from TalkTalk on a 24M package acceptable?
BT have laid the Infinity cables outside my house.
I am very tempted to switch to BT and pay the difference.

Thanks for any advice!

It is an UPTO 24meg package isnt it?
So yes its acceptable....i wouldnt be happy about it myself
  • Yes. 2.5Mbps is acceptable, the average is only about 6Mbps anyway.

Talk Talk could also upgrade you to the fibre service, as could a number of ISPs. Believe Talk Talk call this "with fibre" or "fibre boost" or similar.
  • Thanks, I will look into TT's Fibre Optic boost.

I wonder if TT cap this too?

    Hi Tommy,

Before looking at the Fibre aspect it may be the case that there is improvement that can be made

If you intially synced at 6mbps but this has droped to 2.5 there could be noise (audible or inaudible) on the line which is affecting the BB signal.

Particualrly so if the line was in sync at 3.5 before hand..

When changing to the 24mb the line profile is automatically set at 12db. This is a mid range between 15db (slowest and most stable) and 6db (fastest). If you were on a faster profile before the change this could also be the reason for the drop in speed.

If you register on the TalkTalk Members forum we can check the line stats and advise you further on what speed improvements can be made. If there is a line issue we can look to investigate this and resolve it in full.
