Hi,
I just got an iphone 3gs and I'm totally new to this world. In my home and office I've got the phone to connect to the wireless network so would I be right in thinking that's free?

But when out and about it logs onto the 3g network. Does this only cost money (i.e. use up some of my data allowance) if I'm downloading stuff or does it cost money by being on it all the time?

Sorry for being a bit thick - I'm sure this is bog standard childs play stuff to some of you clever people but I'm not too sure about it all!

Thanks

ZC

  • The wireless in your home and office will be free and this won't affect your data allowance.

When you go onto 3g outside of work and check emails, watch youtube this will come out of your data allowance.

It should not cost you money however if you let us know what tariff you are on we can advise you if there could be any hidden charges.

Thanks Daleski - I'm on Vodafone and get
Your Plan comes with 300 minutes, unlimited texts, 500MB mobile internet and 2GB BT Openzone Wi-Fi

I'm not a massive user - just Facebook, email, the odd look up of things etc. Have started using a few apps like Nike run and Weight Watchers.

Thing is I spend quite a lot of time outside of home and office on a tractor so was a bit worried about that!
  • Download the my vodafone app for your 3gs and let it connect over 3g *this is necessary just for the initial launch and then you can go back to wifi* and then you can see how much calls, texts and data allowance you have left. With Vodafone if you do get near your limit they should sms you and if you go over you get charged £5 for an extra 250mb.

It is very likely that the phone will be using data even if you don't check emails or watch youtube.
  • True but it should be an negligible amount compared to using 3g all the time.

Thanks very much people. I love this site - it's so friendly and helpful.

I've downloaded the myvodafone app which should tell me after the first month where I'm at.

    Hopefully it'll be ok!

Thanks again for all your help

Carl - I thought i did have an internet package. My worry is that I would go over the allowance.

I seem to find the iphone is always connected to the internet - unless anyone knows a fancy way of switching it off?!

    settings
    general
