3 year old washer dryer pouring with smoke...

hi

Not sure if this is the right board. Appologies if it is not.

Can anyone tell me if I have a claim against argos or hoover as my 3y 2m old machine was pouring with smoke today.

The dryer part has not worked for some time,

thanks

  • I really don't think so. If you were using a machine with an known fault then the responsibility for any subsequent loss is yours alone.
If the machine had developed the fault during it's warrenty period then it's your responsibility to get it sorted in due time.
If it's out of warrenty then if you know it's got a fault it's your problem and you need to get it sorted ASP.

  • I have not used it on dryer for ages as that stopped working. I was using it to wash with, which was unaffected.

    Thanks for your reply.

  • My washer/dryer set on fire once, luckily I got home just in time to throw it in the back yard, before it burnt the house down.

seperate washers and tumble driers are much better.
  • I too arrived home and heard mine making a horrendous noise (left it washing a load, and went to pick my son up), went into the kitchen and it had smoke coming from the back and the soap drawer. I turned it off at the spur socket, opeded the door pulled the washing out and pulled the machine out from under the worktop. Smoke was coming from the drum too.

Luckily with the electric disconnected the smoke stopped.

scary though, and cost £350, and was only good for 3y 2m :(

Why not try extending the warranty roughly £50 and then call Hoover to get an engineer out, that's what i did.
  • We had a letter in Nov, asking if we wanted to take a years warrenty out on it. We binned the letter :( Not sure we could take it out now. Think it would look a bit suspicious!!!

Suspicious maybe but i would say coincidental ;)
  • I had a 3 year old Tricity Bendix washer dryer that, just like you, emmited smoke (ie. the start of a small fire) when switched on. Contacted manufacturer who sent an engineer to check. The fault came from the large 3/4" thermostat at the back. The machine was out of warranty but manufacturers do not like fire risks caused by safety devices. Got offer a replacement for a small "150 contribution. Got an AEG that has worked fine since (washer only mind!!). It might be worth contacting your manufacturer's help line.
  • Thanks, my husband will ring Hoover tomorrow just to see what they say....

Need to get it fixed/ order a new one soon as with 3 children the wash basket is filling fast!!!

  • Hoover are coming to look at it on Wednesday. They appologised it couldn't be sooner. :)

They asked if the smoke was black, which would indicate a worn belt, but the smoke was white/ grey.

They wouldn't comment further, but I am glad they are even coming. :)

Trading standards said that 3 y 2 m wouldn't be classed as durable for the life of white goods and that the sale of goods act said things should be ok for up to 6 years if appropriate to the product.

Have nothing to loose by hoover having a look, so will see how it goes....
