Thanks for all your replies. I have just spent all day today shopping with my wife and I understand why grown men cry!
This case is too 'this' and that case is too 'that', it would seem you need to get different cases for different trips. The store assistants have all contradicted themselves in their advice and we ended up coming home none the wiser.
We do know that we don't want to spend more than £60/£70 per case because of how many we need to buy, so that pretty much rules out Samson cases although they did seem good quality. We think we now would be better with soft cases rather than our first thoughts of hard cases. I may well be missing something here but the Antler cases of around £70 didn't seem to be that much different in quality to the cheaper ones we saw in supermarkets.
If we don't find something soon, I am going to haul out my old reliable holdall! Watch this space for divorce updates. 0 0

Try TK Maxx. They sell Anter, Samsonite, Skyflyte, etc at much better prices than other shops. One thing I would say, no matter how good your case is, mine was damaged earlier this month by the airline. My 5 year guarantee is no good in this instance. My brother's hard case was damaged too so it's just a matter of luck.0

That was one place we didn't look cleopatra....might have a wander there tomorrow, thanks.
That's a good point about airline damage, that's another point for buying cheaper rather than dearer I think.0

Have just bought a set of three 'hard shell' cases on ebay, they are brand new and really good quality, with wheels etc, they were £59.0

If the airline damage your bag they usually give you a new one or the money to replace it. BA detached one end of the handle from a rather old but still in perfect condition M & S rollercase on a flight from Heathrow to Manchester, they tried to replace it with a gym sized bag but on receipt of a few harsh words they relented and sent me a nice new bag the next day. The old bag has been repaired by the local shoe repair shop but it's been relegated to the bottom of the pile for emergencies.0

I had to buy mine in Vancouver as I bought too much out there and needed an extra case to cart it all back (not much help I know). I bought a mix of hard shell and soft. The best thing about it - its bright orange. My husband nearly flipped when he saw which one I had chosen but when we got to Toronto and he came out of the toilet and spotted it straight away on the carousel from the other side of baggage claim he said it was the best idea I had had. We then spent 15 minutes searching through all the black suitcases trying to decide which ones were ours as the luggage labels had fallen off lol.0

 Anyone got these?
Largest one is £60 instore and feels really solid. Only drawback I can see is that it has more outer strengthening if that makes sense and so the inside isn't necessarily quite as big as some of the other cases of similar size. Sides and base feel much stronger than many other cases I've seen.
Not very sure what an average size is suitable for a 2 week visit?
Visited TKMaxx today, they had a fair amount but only 2 of the same kind and only ONE of the labels stated what weight the cases were. Checked on the internet when I came home and one of the ones I was looking at was nearly 7kgs, which I think is just too heavy.0

This is true but it may involve some hassle.
We had to travel 25 miles to the shop to ask them to repair the cases or provide a letter to say it was "beyond economic repair".
 Return trip 50 miles.
Another 50 miles to pick it up.
We now buy cases which have a local dealer.0
