DD increase to EON

Options
My DD to EON was increased from £80 to £120 6 weeks ago. Today they want another increase to £141. I'm £138 in credit and have used 2.7% less energy this year. When I phoned to say I don't want the increase they threw a load of figures my way. Anybody else having problems?

A load of figures is good, but not a load of figures thrown at you over the phone. Ask them to put all the figures into a clear written explanation that they believe is compliant with "Standard Licence Condition 27.14", something their supply licence requires them to provide.

There are 2 approaches to dealing with this, (1) the driving of a wedge through any "erroneous assumptions" or (2) a fundamental challenge to a process which seeks to recover an anticipated shortfall (for whatever reason) in less than 12 months.

Start with 1. If they fail to confirm the "load of figures" in writing, raise a formal complaint citing failure to comply with SLC27.14

Yes Eon customers because of their 'zero spring balance' policy.

    Hi fruitdogs,

As others have said there is a lot of info on the forum about DD's already.

However, when you called the agent should have gone through this properly with you not just thrown figures at you, that's not good enough :(

If you would like me to help you specifically, you can email your details to the email address in my profile page and I will happy go through the calculations with you properly.

As backfoot says we do try to achieve a zero balance for the spring review, ready to be able to calculate the next year's payments. The recent price increase and if you have changed tariff will also have an impact on the payment amount.

Just let me know if I can help you.

    Helena :)

Indeed not, but why does the Eon letter not clearly explain the calculation?:(

I don't believe a telephone explanation can possibly be appropriate to the complexity of the calculation and the importance of the consumption assumptions* to the calculation. Quite apart from the impact of a "sudden excessive hike" on a household budget.

Can you offer the forum an assurance that last winter's exceptional severity is discounted before consumption is projected forward as a basis for the payment calculation?

  • I've joined this site and come to these forums because I've experienced the same ridiculous changes as yourself fruitdogs. We get both gas and electric from EOn. On our latest gas bill, we were told that our DD would rise nigh on 50%, from £60p/m to £89p/m. This is with being £93 in credit on our gas account.

Their estimate our usage for the next 12 months as being £878, but 12 * £89 = £1068. £1068 is £190 over their estimated usage, which in effect is more than 2 months worth of direct debit payments.

    When I put those facts together;
    50% DD increase
DD increase would pay £190 more a year than EOns own estimates.
I'm already £93 in credit on the account.
... all it says to me is if EOn wanted to keep my business, they've gone about it in entirely the wrong way. As such, what I'll be doing is to move both our accounts.

My own detailed examination of our gas usage over the last couple few years tells me that we're very consistent year-on-year.

Personally I'm not going to stand for such an increase and I'll vote with my feet.
  • I joined this evening as well borntorun - for exactly the same reason. I've posted in another thread on this forum.

Received my letter today - £19/month increase from 1st Dec. I'm £110 in credit, as at a couple of weeks ago. My stepson moved out in July, just leaves my wife and I.
Confident we'll have lower usage this winter, compared to last winter. Not happy with the increase - tried to call Eon this eve - couldn't get through. I guess they're having loads of complaints.
I will call them tom morn and see what they say.
I may write to Money Mail as well, if they're obstructive.
Plan finishes in mid-Jan, so will leave them then if they're obstructive tom.

Hi SiWilts. If you manage to get through to tomorrow, I'd very much appreciate you posting an update here if you could find the time. I'd be very interested to hear how you got on.

    Best regards.

    Hi borntorun75 and SiWilts,

I don't know if you noticed but I am here to help you if I can :)

I'm sorry about not being able to get through on the phone, I know it has been busy.

In general some customer's DD's are going up at the mo, part of the reason could be because of the price increase we had in September. Other reasons are tariff changes/usage.

But I am happy to help you specifically if you would like me to, just email me your account details to the email address in my profile page.

    Thanks

    Helena :)

They are going up, because that huge price increase is being recovered over an unreasonably short period of time. This is to satisfy an Eon Policy. The recovery period should be over 12 months not 6 months. Combined with other adjustments, it is hardly surprising that the phone lines are blocked.

The solution is not piecemeal help to some Forum members but a policy change which is compliant with your own Licence Conditions.

My advice to customers is to refuse the above offer and make a formal complaint bringing the matter to the attention of Consumer Focus and the Energy Ombudsman.
