Good job my daughters school isn't strict as I lost my mayonaisse on the way home from the supermarket somehow, so couldn't make her tuna sandwiches, so she's got chocolate spread - Ah well it's Friday and she wouldn't even eat a pepperoni panini with beetroot (school dinner choice)0

This is all down to an ignorance and fear of carbs due to the popular Atkins diet. People almost seem to think that carbs ARE fat! They're not! They're energy. Only problem with them is, if you eat more energy than you need, the body will CONVERT it to fat and then store it, but carbs are not fat per se.
We need more education about the different food groups. Many foods fall into more than one category, and most people aren't aware of that. Are pulses a protein or an insoluble fibre? Are nuts a protein or a fat? Are dried fruits a sugar or a fat source? Answer: they're BOTH! Many people are taught to think that all fruit is low fat but this is NOT the case with fruit that has been dried! Last but not least, are refined starchy foods a source of carbohydrates or a source of soluble fibre? Answer: they're BOTH! Yes, people only seem to know about INSOLUBLE fibre (pulses, wholegrains, dried fruits, etc) but few people realise that White bread, pasta, White rice, porridge oats, wheatabix, malt loaf etc are sources of SOLUBLE fibre as well as being carbs! Soluble fibre forms a gel when mixed with water in the stomach and helps keep our poos the right soft consistency. It is ESSENTIAL at preventing both constipation AND diarrhoea, as anyone with IBS will know! So go tell your dinner ladies "carbs are not a fat and starches such as malt loaf happen to be my child's essential source of soluble fibre. When you've learnt how to be a dietician, you can come and police our lunches again. For now, go away and stop scaring our children by telling them the outright LIE that starches, carbs and soluble fibre will make them fat!"0 -
I haven't had chance to read the whole thread.
When my son was doing his DofE soreen was recommend as snack throughout the day for them on the long walks as it is calorie heavy & releases energy slowly.Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0 -

What is it with all the different 'breads' on the list for one week. Wholemeal bread, wholemeal roll, pitta, wrap - and the things for the over 9's in addition are West Indian bread, rye bread, fruit bread, baguettes - I have probably missed some
Unless you've got a really large family, when are you going to eat the rest of the loaves! And I don't think freezing all of these would be the answer either. Not Rachmaninov

I think it's just to show how many different meals can be sent in lunch boxes, not a restrictive list to rigidly adhere to.0 -

As ideas I can accept that, but showing it as week 1, week2, could really put some people off even trying. Not Rachmaninov

It's a bit like watching some of the cooking programmes on TV. Ingredients get used that I'd have to do a special shop to buy but the implication is that we all have them in our cupboards at home.0
