My Walls need skimming BUT?

:money::T Hi, my walls in my bathroom ideally need re skimming but I cannot afford to do this. I have thought about plastering myself but would probably muck it up as its not as easy as it looks.

Does anyone know of any alternatives to a plasterer and skimming. I have heard of 4 main products and would like to know if any of them work and will even and smooth out painted cracked walls. The products are:

Polycell Smoothover
Wickes ready mix plaster skim
Everbuild fill and skim
Everbuild filler coat

Please help, I have stripped the room of wallpaper and am ready for the next phase.

In addition i painted over the tiles in the bathroom and some of the paint is coming off, so whats the best and quickest way to strip the paint off?

Many Thanks

I think just normal emulsion, just sanded tiles before painting

What about just wall to ceiling tiling the whole room then you don't need to worry if the walls are less than perfect?
    I think....
  • The tiles are so old that the same size does not exist, and that would mean taking all the tiles off and there is alot of them
  • And i really cant afford that
  • We used Polycell Smoothover in our lounge with great results. It looks like the walls have been professionally skimmed and was definitely worth doing.

Its not easy though, and it takes ages to do. I think you would need to be patient and quite handy at DIY to make a good job. Its also easier in a big room where you have a nice straight run of wall to work with. I guess in the bathroom you will have lots of small areas where it takes some work to get right.

I dont want to put you off completely though. My OH has no plastering experience but with time and patience he did make a very good job and it will never need doing again. If you do go ahead I recommend buying the kit with the proper tools, we found these were easier to use. If you have any specific questions just ask and I will get OH to try and help.

Follow your point, but you can get white plain tiles very cheaply these days & they are modern. Accessorise in colour... just an idea
  • None of the products will give you the super smooth finish you think they will, and I am pretty sure that ripping off the ood tiles and re-tiling is as cost effective at paintin/ skimming it and then not being happy.

Cheap white tiles, end of line, special offers, but powder adhesive (much cheaper) and mix it yourself.

What is the condition of the walls? Is it just a few chips, or big holes? Easi fill works. Walls I patched are as good as some that were skimmed years ago. It helps to use an acrylic sealer followed by 3 + coats of acrylic paint!
