Which one is better is really down to personal preference. While the PS3 has the advantage of being able to double up as a Blu-Ray player, the overall hardware differences are such that there is little noticeable difference whilst playing games.

The best way to decide would be to try and find a list of exclusive titles that are on each platform - for instance, the popular Halo series is exclusive to the Xbox and titles such as Resistance were PS exclusives - and try and see which games your daughter would prefer.

The controllers are different too so it may be she has a preference between the Xbox and PS3 controllers.

As for Hard Drives in the Xbox, I would lean towards the 250Gb myself as this gives you the flexibility to install games, which cuts down on wear and tear on the disc drive, whilst also allowing you to download content that is made available for any games your daughter may have - some content is free and some costs money but it is always nice to grab the free content made available.

Also, if at any point you choose to take advantage of services such as Zune, or some of the forthcoming Video-on-Demand services, it may be that you need the space to download to.

One thing I would say against the Xbox is that Microsoft Points, a currency they use for their online stuff is irritating and that if you did get an Xbox and found you needed MS Points, never buy them direct through the console; go to Amazon.com or the like where you can buy points cards for less. Oh and bear in mind that Xbox Live Gold costs about £40 a year and is needed for many Xbox services, which PS Network does not charge for. Around Xmas time, Xbox Live usually has a buy 12 months sub for 75% deal or so.

Find out which system her friends use. Most of the 'fun' of these systems is the online live interaction with friends and they tend to fall hard into the Xbox or PS3 camp.

If you go for the Xbox pay a bit more for the 250gb as above, otherwise it is likely you will regret it later.

Got both (well all 3 actually) and I have to say the xBox is my prefered choice of console, the Kinect is pretty dam accurate and seems to have gained more traction than the move for the PS3. I also have to say I've been a big fan of their controller, it just seems more natural in my hands than the PS3.

Don't know if it's still an issue, but how much room do you have to stand in front of your TV? At my friends (who has kinect) we have to clear 3 metres of space to play on the kinect.
I have PS move on my PS3, however i don't use it at all as it's not great. My wife does Zumba on the ps move, only needs 1.5 metres or so of space, and she plays singstar dance in the same space.
If you dont have room for kinect and are not going to waste your money on move, I would go with what has been said previously - do her friends play online, and if so what consoles do they own? and what controller does your daughter prefer?
I used to own an xbox, but traded for PS3 as I wanted a bluray player, and fee online play. both consoles play the same for me, and are as good as each other...
  • I'm impressed with the quality of the responses in this thread. Absolutely bang on the money, all very relevant points to consider.

There's not a lot between the two, so ask her which one most of her friends have.
  • Thanks to all for the advice and help, looks to me like the xbox kinnect 250 it is :-)

All of the above is spot on, not a great deal between them and I agree the most important factor will probably be what your daughters friends have as they will want to play together. Glad to see no idiot suggested getting a Wii lol.

Deffo avoid the 4gb model and go for the 250gb xbox its surprising how quickly you can fill, its always a good idea to install the game to the hard drive aswell takes the strain off the drive/laser.
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

Agree - I haven' t used the Xbox much, we have PS3 and the advantage is there is no subscription for on line, plus you get blu ray, and I player.
