True, but it's more complicated than that. There aren't specific laws for mp3's, and it comes under import laws for which there are different rules for private use and distribution. There are plenty of loop holes as the laws are outdated and not setup to handle such things.

I have to agree that the laws probably can't handle the digital age. Guess we'll have to see, the UK high court has agreed the BPI has juristiction and the right to take them to court in the UK. Won't be long before Russia shuts the sites down themselves considering the pressure they're getting from the WTO.

It's already gone through. The Russian government seems to have had it's arm bent slightly, and they're in the process of changing their laws to make it illegal in Russia. It should go through by June, as which point AllOfMp3 (and similar) will cease to function.

I wonder which country they'll move to next!

  • A vast majority of the cheap MP3 players won't play DRM protected WMA files. Unfortunately they don't usually advertise this in their sales blurb and it's something you don't find out until you've paid your money to the sites for your songs.

Those MP3 players that do play the files will tell you. Players from the Creative Muvo series play DRM songs just fine.

    all

I'm sorted now. I got a tip via pm about a legal software package to unprotect the tracks. It works!
I will always pay for my music (the full amount that is, not some dodgy Russian download site). Anything else is theft, pure and simple. However, I do feel strongly that once I've downloaded a track I should be able to play it on whatever device I want; now I can!

    Thanks for the help.
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc
