marleyboy wrote:The fact is you can buy a disc for as little as 10p, copy and even print off the covers. In effect you can have a movie or album for a good 90% discount and still have it as good as the original, that tells me a lot about just how much money the music and movie industry cream off the public, as it is costing them a lot less to mass produce a product, and sell it off as an original.
I agree pretty much with everything else you said but simply working out how much something costs in materials is not the complete picture. Most of the cost of a dvd, software app etc, is to recoup development costs. To sell something based purely based on manufacturing costs alone would be disastrous for a company. Especially for something like the software industry, software is extremely expensive for development, I think in non-specialist software engineering (from my lecture days), it costs about £40 per line of code on average. From a company perspective that doesn't even take into account that overall you need to offset project failures and also invest into R&D as well for future projects, and still many companies go into liquidation. I doubt there's as much profit as you're making out. In the case of films there are plenty of examples of them making an actual loss."She is quite the oddball. Agreed, but Mr Jo Bloggs isnt thinking about what its going to do to the industry, He justs thinks about how much money he is saving. Selfish I know, but thats the way the wafer crumbles.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

But if every company tries to sell their products at the same price as the "black market" (who themselves don't have to cover expenses) then they'd all be working at a loss. It just wouldn't be possible to have any business at all. I think you give people too little credit. I wouldn't buy a stolen car, just because it was cheaper. As easy as it is I don't buy pirated films either because I have a bit more moral fibre than that. This is a moneysaving site that's true but not at the expense of the law."She is quite the oddball. I am not saying that it is right to purchase illegal data, and I myself prefer to buy the originals, mainly to go with my collection, I am just stating to you that the majority of Jo Bloggs, arent interested in the legalities of the product. using a stolen car as an example is a little extreme, as chances are anyone who buys it will not easily get away with driving it away. Yet a complete stranger in a pub could offer Jo Bloggs, a top of the range Laptop for £50, obviously its been stolen from somebody, but do you really think the guy wont sell it to someone?
My point is, its going to go on, regardless.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

It's not proven. Naturally the BPI (and similar) are going to say it's illegal.
It's still not allowed to be recommended or mentioned on this site. There is a thread on here somewhere discussing it, but I think that's the only place we're allowed to mention it.
DRM and high prices are what's destroying the industry."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -

Buying those tracks in this country (no matter the origin of the website) comes under UK juristiction and the copyright act 1988. It's the BPI and artists that matter as it's their material. There is nothing in that act that makes it legal. The music is being sold without copyright owner's consent, by very definition that's illegal in the UK. Whether the BPI or anyone decide to prosecute or not doesn't affect the legality. By the site's own logic they are only legal because of paying the ROM, which has no relevance to making the purchase in the UK."She is quite the oddball. True, but it's more complicated than that. There aren't specific laws for mp3's, and it comes under import laws for which there are different rules for private use and distribution. There are plenty of loop holes as the laws are outdated and not setup to handle such things."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0
