Supanet Broadband - New 40Mb Fibre Internet

Hi,

I need a fast, stable internet for my new job (video streaming my new cookery channel) and the best I can find at the moment is supanet's fibre broadband (preston area), my friend works at supanet and says it can be as much as 40MB download depending on where I live and who else uses it in my area. (he could be bias as he will get some good comission from supanet)

Anyway, the price is around £19.99 for the first few months then raises to around £20-24 depending on how mucj i download, I am not sure what fibre is but I am going to give it a test, and my friend will pop by to fix any issues, will post later if its any good...

I know supanet has got some bad reviews on here but i am hoping this new service will have less users on it so it will be fast to start with, and i will double check the T+C's before i sign up..

Graham.. :j

Didn't realise they were still in business, and taking about business, see clause 4 of their T&Cs

  • Hi Penrhyn,

Thanks for the information, I may have exaggerated the term “job”. I have recently retired and I am in the process of setting the YouTube channel up for more of a long term hobby project that can actually pay me if it gets enough unique visits (think around £1 for every 1,000 views).

I am only taking the Supanet fibre offer as a good friend of mine (ex-student) who works there is 100% sure this service will meet my needs as it is brand new and there are only a few hundred uses on it, so now it is super fast - will run a speedtest soon to see if it gets near 40mb. I think it’s the way that fibre works; he says it is a kind of virtual fibre that might explain the new flashy router thing that BT installed for me.

Its called fibre to the cabinet (FTTC). This means the optical cable is brought much nearer to your property. You still have a copper cable coming into your property. I guess its a rebadged version of BT's Infinity package.
This is similar to what Virgin cable have been doing for years.

  • Hi,

As I promised here are the speedcheck results from speedtest . net which I think are pretty good:

Download: 35.6Mb (Promised upto 40Mb from Supanet Fibre)
    Upload: 2.4Mb

I have been told I live quite close to the preston exchange, but that is a massive improvement on my last provider and means I can play with hosting my own videos.

This fibre product should be more popular than it is, for the extra money it does the job. I wouldnt have even heard of thsi fibre product, good job my techy mate told me. Well worth the move... :T

So what's the data cap on the Supanet package?
BT's Infinity tariff is absurd given that the cheaper package has a monthly 40GB cap.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Thats a good point I forgot to check, so many things to look for nowadays !!

Just rung my mate up who works for Supanet Sales and he says it is 50GB download limit, so it is better than BT infinity by 10GB.

I am not sure what you use your internet for but for me that is fine based on my projected usage for this year and even next year.

He did say this is a brand new fibre package for supanet and they are looking for sales quickly and that you can often force them into giving you a better deal than advertised. Penrhyn posted above that this is probably BT infinity (re-branded) anyway so I am happy the quality and reliablility is there and now just found out it is better.

I'd be more concerned about the upload limit if you are streaming video from a server via it. 50GB will go nowhere.
Monthly caps are concerned with total data used, it's usually irrelevant if up or downstream-what matters is the total.
And you don't have to make any commercial profit for it to be seen as business usage.

  • Thanks for the great information Macman, on what an upload limit is, that is another thing I need to swat up on and see how this will impact me and my new "hobby".

I did get confirmation that upload would count in the total data usage cap (to be honest I never looked in the T+C's for this) and I was not happy and felt a bit misinformed, so he has agreed to permanently lower my price to £17.99 per month and he will personally watch my download / upload usage over the next few months to see what kind of band I am in (high / low usage) and he also gave me a personal agreement I will not get charged if I go over 50GB limit (I do believe him or I will kick his butt).
