Strange Claim on home insurance

I'd like to know how to phrase my claim. I have a feeling that if I told the truth it might not be accepted.

The truth is... My dog was so excited by a knock on the kitchen window that it ran full pelt towards the window, failed to brake in time and ran headfirst into the dishwasher breaking the control panel and rendering it useless (it is a large and heavy dog)

Would an insurance company accept this?

Damage by household pets is normally excluded.

Accidental damage by humans is not (providing you have accidental damage cover).

I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions.

Even if it is an exclusion many insurers will allow the claim providing it is an act that a hman could also do.

Ie knocking over a time of paint is ok
    Scratching the carpet is not

Give them a call you may well be surprised

  • As you are asking the question - it would seem that you do adopt the 'honesty is the best policy approach'
Considering any policy excess, possible increased future premiums and the possibility of feeling guility - may I suggest another possibility?

As your dishwasher has suffered panel / plastics damage why not call your local 'one-man-band' appliance repairer? If it is a couple of years old he/she may well have a 'trade-in' that has had major damage (leak / motor etc.) which has rendered it 'spares-only'. The panel / switches etc should be in good condition, and because they are parts he would not usually need many of they should be cheap! He should be able to fit them cheaply as well.
This may well be a an option, it may take a little while - but think of the great conversations whilst doing the washing / drying-up!

Have you got pet insurance? My policy covers accidental damage caused by the dog.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
  • I was able to claim on our tenants contents insurance when the cat knocked two large church candles off the window sill in the bathroom into the bath and cracked it - we had the bath replaced and resealed etc on the cover we had? And I did tell them it was the cat! she laughed for a while though

hmm, whilst I don't usually send people down the route of fibbing, I know that I have had to turn down accidental damage claims caused by pets.

Blame your OH, that's probably the best solution.

Commit insurance fraud or not - that is the choice. I'll also leave it up to you to commit a crime or not!

And justwannabeloved - if you do work in insurance you would be well aware that policies differ and there ARE companies who will pay for damage caused by pets. This is the second time you have quoted from the product you deal with as if it is definitive. Do you think everybody on here is insured with you??

Maybe not within the Insurance Company you work for. Ive worked within areas of Claims for over 10 years and as i have already stated my current employers, incidentally the 2nd largest home insurers in the UK deal, as i have already stated - ie if the claim could also have been caused by a human we will deal as normal. Rather than stating your response as fact why not simply state what happens within your company, but state this is just within your company rather than potentially putting someone off from making what may be an acceptable claim.
Furthermore our policy DOES indeed have this exlusion however we use a common sense approach (yes insurers do sometimes have one!!)
  • In the call centre where I work we handle claims for many large insurance companies, not just one company ... I could be taking a claim for one insured's company and my colleague sitting next to me can be taking a claim for an insured's different company..

They can be High Net Worth Policys including Finer /Tapestry or they are standard policies .. so therefore we do have many policy booklets at hand at work, so we can quote the wording during the call if need be..

Like I said, I have not being working there for to long and at present , I didnt say I was a leading expert either, however I simply just wanted to say when I have taken calls regarding pet damage , this has been in the what we will not cover exclusion section of the policy booklet (s) and this is an standard exclusion in all the ones I have seen so far .
