declare defaulted credit card?...

Hi there!

(Apologies for posting this twice but, it is kind of relevant in both fields - credit cards and house renting. If anyone's about to take it down, please leave one post in the most appropriate) :)

Anyway, I would like some advice on the following, please:

A couple of years ago I requested an original copy of my Credit Card Agreement and the bank was unable to supply me with a kosher contract with the prescribed terms and conditions. In effect, they defaulted and, therefore, I stopped paying; I no longer hear nothing from them.

However, I am about to rent a house, possibly, and wonder, whether I should mention on the form that I have to submit that I have a Credit Card or not? Should I mention it or do I say I haven't got one? Technically, the debt is not enforceable but, she may well see it on the credit check. She did say that she was only looking for CCJs and Court Orders.

I realise that I won't get much sympathy from some of you, so please save any non-constructive negativity; but thanks in advance to any constructive advice! :)

Regards,

Rooderz

Why would you have to tell the landlord whether you have a credit card or not?

They may do a behind the scenes credit check, but i've no idea if the way you've escaped your debt would kill your credit score.

I'd check on one of the credit rating sites to look at your file.

noddle is free and will tell you most of the stuff you need.

Landlords, more correctly the agencies they use, cannot check anything on your credit record that isn't public information.

That is, they can check if you have been bankrupt or have CCJs against you. They do not have access to any repayment information, defaults, or credit information at all.

The 3 main credit agencies only share credit information with companies that share information with them, e.g. banks, creditcard companies, mobile companies etc..

That why the likes of British gas now share how you run your account as this means they can run a full credit search before opening accounts.
If you keep on doing what's you've always done, you'll keep on being what you've always been...

Yes I spotted them on my call credit file and wondered what they were up to.

However as an essential fuel for heating etc.. I'd be surprised if British Gas were allowed to reject people.

I presume they just offer a payg meter instead.

Not in my experience. Northwood UK, my lettings agent, did a search on Equifax when I moved in July and did a full credit score - as they did with my OH.

They noted that my OH's "Score" was lower than mine, and mentioned his repayment history and debt level.

Interesting. That generally goes against everything i've read.

There is a representative from Experian on these boards who has posted previously stating that landlords/agents are unable to access credit information.

Indeed, it does go against the reciprocal vibe of the DPA and credit checking regulations, but Northwood UK at the very least, do have access to it.

My OH failed the credit check with the prior lettings agents (Clear Lettings) despite being registered to vote and having no public information like CCJs etc - due to an unsatisfied O2 default he had on his credit file at the time.
