Did BT get you to run their speedtest?

    You can run it here

    http://speedtester.bt.com/

This will tell you your IP profile which is what you need to look at.

If it's at something like 500Kps then you need to ring BT and ask them to reset your profile if it has been reduced by them or automatically by the exchange. However it can take a few days for it to go back up.

By the way, does this need Java to run? and if so, how can I download it? I think I uninstalled it following advice on here!

I hope you get it sorted quicker than me! Now 2 months down the line, several engineer visits, a new router and they still can't sort it out! Another engineer booked for this week so will see what happens then!

I get this message when I try to do the BT speed test "Java is not installed/enabled on your PC. To use the Performance Tester Java must be installed and enabled on your PC and Browser. To install latest version of Sun JRE, available for Windows, Linux, OS X, Solaris and other operating systems"

Thanks mate, I think it did install correctly in the end (got it from the link on the Java error message before I saw your post). I'm at work now though but last night I tried the beta tester and speedtest.net and was getting speeds back up between 7-10 again. Out of maybe 20 tests, 1 or 2 were down at 1mbps levels.

I changed two of the ASDL filters and tried to install new router but the wirless key that came with it doesn't work :( (must ring and get a new one) so reinstalled the old router and lo and behold, speed was fine again.

Over the weekend I will try to do the bt speedtest though to see what it logs my IP speed at.

Many thanks for your help again so far.
