Our new house is awaiting a re-valuation as it had an extension on it!! But still it should not go up a band. If they try it I will object.

I have to say this sounds normal to me. We put an extension on our house 18 months ago and when we looked at our Tax banding we noticed our property had an " i " next to it. When we questioned what the " i " was for it means that when we sell our house or if re-valuing of properties is done then ours will go up.

Site still down at 7.25 am. This can't be anything to do with the number of people trying to access it. My guess is that it was deliberately pulled after the programme to enable it to have a section added to it - probably emphasizing the 6 month limit to try to reduce the number of claims/appeals. It will be back once high-level policy decisions have been made on the approach to adopt.
  • Worked fine for us this morning - 6am - seems we're in the correct band. Got confused when valuation of our house bought in '96 was less than it was in '91, till I remembered that house prices had fallen in early 90's - a graph would be useful to show this!! Thanks Martin!!
I'm mad!!!! :rotfl::jand celebrating everyday every year!!!
  • I did this and tried to appeal (in England) but they told me I had to have moved, or altered my house within the previous 6 months to pursue it. Is this lies? It seems that the moral is to check a.s.ap when you move.

Are you in scotland by any chance?

There is a strict timescale for appeals against banding here, it's different to England, iirc it's 6 months from date of purchase or from when it was assesed.

there are timescales in scotland - but you can appeal that - appeal that your out of time, it sounds silly, but is acutally really easy - i don't it by e-mail and it worked, i got a reduction in banding, and a large cheque.
It's worth pursuing in scotland to

also remember all the rules about house prices/banding going up when you improve a house doesn't apply in scotland - it's the value of your home at april 91

accroding to my banding the value would have gone up only £10k from 91-01, i queried this was unlikley so the initial banding must have been to high. I won - it's worth pursuing in scotland it actually seems easier to query
Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.

If you've done extensions etc the council tax band usually goes up when house is sold. That's what the ( i ) is.

If you think you're on the wrong band anyone check it out before you move and appeal as it is more difficult to do after you have moved.

Look at the council tax thread that is up to 13 pages. Access through Council tax cashback on front page of MSE email. Lots of discussion and advice on there.

In England you can appeal after 6 months if you have a very valid reason.
