Black Screen - Have I killed my phone?

I think I know that answer, but I'll ask anyway.
My HTC desire was working earlier today, but now the screen remains black when I turn it on although the icons at the bottom light up. If I get an email the little green light starts flashing. I get the ringing tone if someone calls or sends a text, but I can't answer the call.
I've taken out the battery and sim card and replaced them. The phone vibrates and I can hear the little tune it plays when it starts up, but the screen remains resolutely black.
I've connected phone to the laptop but can't select the function I need from the phone touchscreen
Any ideas anyone?

Probably worth trying a hard factory reset - but only if you have nothing important on the phone. If there is stuff on the memory card - you can take the memory card out before trying reset.
