Hi All,

Due to my new energy monitor I'm wanting to replace the 10 x 50W halogen bulbs throughout the house with theses in subject.

Does anyone have any advise which will cost aprox £120 for qty 10

I also need to replace 14 x E14 SES type with Aurora2 brand being £200:eek:

    What advice do you seek?

If each light saves you 46W (50W - 4W) it means you save approx 5p for every 10 hours use.

You will have to use them a lot to save the £12 cost - approx 2,400 hours.

Look at Deltech, they are not cheap but the light from them is very very close to the halogen equivalent. We have the 3x CREE LED type, rather than the multi LED likop on Group on.

I use International lamps, buit they are close to work so I save on delivery...

  • Make sure that you really want to use COOL WHITE to replace lamps within a household, these give out a clinical blue-white light which will make the rooms look like a cross between a football stadium and an operating theatre.

A cheaper solution for bedrooms and living areas would be to just use table / floor lamps fitted with ordinary low energy lamps, bought for around £1 or less. Just use the halogens for infrequent trips into the room, and use the table lamps if you are in there for any period of time.

Beware that in the led world, 50w equivalent doesn't mean the light is equivalent to a 50w halogen (and often nothing like it at all). My experience is that you can replace 50w spots with the best leds available for £4, but they are poor for actual full room illumination (usually due to a small beam angle which is necessary to get the required brightness). Make sure if you pay £20, you are getting the very top of the range, and not the same bulb you can get elsewhere for £4.

    I am with the PPS.

Cool white isn't very pleasant for whole room IMO, warm white is better.

I still don't think they are much good for whole room lighting, feature lighting yes.

Price does seem to get you better specs and Aurora/Cree seem to get good reviews on these threads. There are loads of cheap/mid range ones from awful to bearable for the saving.

If you do thread search for LEDs I am sure several will turn up with lovers, haters and some "industry" bods. Here is one recent one from the DIY forum. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3610255

How about GU10 CFLs, the route I took for a kitchen allowing for the start up time , they give good "surround" light and stil save 80% or more(50W equiv.).
