Errr, It's been resolved folks!!0

It would still have identified a transmission fault, but as the torque convertor, which you can still drive if it doesn't lock.
Which turned out to be a gearbox fault as no fourth gear, which you can't drive.
Of course you can drive a car which doesn't change up to 4th, if you only drive in rush hour traffic I reckon it would never get the chance.
Anyway I know of afew drivers of manuals who seem to forget 4th exists, and wouldn't know what to do with a 5th gear.I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.

No, seriously, which ones? Because I don't know of any salvage operators who will take a car without a V5.The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
oh come on, there's bound to be the odd dodgy scrap merchant out there who will take a car without paperwork.
There are still 'spivs' in every industry.I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.

Skodafabia said that not all salvage companies need to have a V5 and they could be located in the Yellow Pages. I am not sure there is a specific section in the Yellow Pages for salvage companies who do not need a V5.
I always thought that all salvage companies need a V5.The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
There was a big thread a while ago where some poster had let their tax and insurance on their banger expire whilst the car was still on the road. No V5, and the address was out of date anyway. She wanted rid of the car. She said she rang around and found IIRC two places that would take it without the V5. She went ahead and got it scrapped... so it can't be that hard.
Shouldn't generalise; but the type of person who runs a scrap metal business is exactly the type of person to bend the rules a little if he thinks he can get away with it.0 -

But Skodafabia was suggesting that they don't need to have one. They all NEED to have one. There are some rogues (thankfully very few and far between) who might break the rules, but that is something quite different.
Trading Standards constantly mystery shop salvage companies for this very infringement (as well as others). If they are found to be offering such a service, they lose their licence and get shut down. There was a salvage yard not far from where I live, he lost his licence for that and other infringements.
I believe that from this month, the rules have got even tighter. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
You said earlier you didn't know of any salvage operators that would take a car without a V5. Now you've admitted your local one did? :rotfl:There was a salvage yard not far from where I live, he lost his licence for that and other infringements.
You 'need' a V5 to scrap a car in the same way you 'need' to drive no more than 70mph on a motorway.0 -

Therefore there are none that I know of; the one I referred to lost their ability to scrap cars quite sometime ago, they no longer exist. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0
