Unlocking iphone 4 Vodafone

Hi,

I've recently purchased an iPhone 4 from ebay which is locked to the Vodafone network. I want to use a Giff Gaff sim. Can someone suggest how I get it unlocked and how much it will cost me?

I've had a quote of £50 form my local unlocking guy. Is this a fair price or is there any way of getting it done cheaper or for free?

Thanks,
Richard.

Consider ringing Vodafone and asking them.

I notice they don't charge to unlock contract phones and only charge 20 for PAYG.

    Hi dickyseville,

If you have bought the handset from eBay and it is pre-owned, it can only be unlocked by the original owner. I recommend you speak to the seller and see if they can help with this.

If you have any further questions, feel free to give me a shout.

  • seems odd that only the original owner can unlock a phone surely there has to be some legislation for this, it means that you arent free to sell an item you paid for. read here that its free no mention of the t&c you quoted.

  • you can always purchase a Gevey Sim from ebay. It replaces the sim tray with one that has a chip in and you put the sim card you want to use on top of the chip and switch on your phone. Should recognise the sim then.
  • Hi, with reference to the Gevey Sim, does this limit me to anything on the iPhone? Will all apps still be available, can I use it with a gift gaff mobile? Can I still update the iPhone with software updates? Etc etc
  • Hi all (and especially the Vodafone company representative),
I've contacted the guy who I purchased the iPhone 4 from ebay today. He informs me he wasn't the original buyer of the phone on the iphone contract, but he's going to try and contact the lady who sold him the phone. I was wondering, if we cannot contact the original owner what options are open to me? Can I take in a copy of the ebay invoice to a Vodafone shop and would they then agree to unlock it?

Getting a bit desperate now because this is for my son for xmas.

I want to try all avenues before I have to try a Gevey sim card.

    Thanks,
    Richard.

    Hi dickyseville,

Unfortunately to retrieve the unlock code we would need to access the Vodafone UK account and confirm security with the account holder. If the original buyer contacts us, we can then unlock the handset.
