Child Element section of Child Benefit?

Hi All,
I have recently applied for child benefit for our young daughter (6 months old). We currently receive £20.30 a week, however I was under the impression that a lump sum (Child Element) was also paid? We have received no lump sum at present.
Is this something I need to apply for separately? At present we are living with my parents so the household income would be around 40K a year. My wife does not work.
We have also applied for Workign Tax credit which was rejected as the form did not have my employment detials on, so I have reapplied for this.
Has anyone had a similar experience in not getting the Child Element part of their Child Benefit paid?
Thanks

Child Benefit is paid per week per child. There are no elements or lump sum payments.
However Tax credits have working and child elements and you need to submit an application for that separate from Child Benefit as Tax Credits are means tested whilst Child Benefit currently is not. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. There is no specific lump sum for having a child. The health in pregnancy grant was abolished. There is a Sure Start Maternity Grant from the Social Fund but you have to be receiving IS, JSA(IB), ESA-IR or Working Tax Credit where a disability or severe disability element is included in the award or Child Tax Credit at a rate higher than the family element.Don't thank me, thank my post :T

As noted above, "child element" refers to Child Tax Credit, not Child Benefit. You need to make a separate claim for this - but it's the same claim as for Working Families Tax Credits. It's paid 4-weekly though, not in a lump sum.
OP: your household income is you and your partner. You don't count your parents' income in your tax credits claim.0 -
OK Thanks, so really we should wait for news about the Working Tax Credit form we filled in?
Or do we need to apply for the Child Benefit part of Working Tax Credits seperately?
Thanks for the advice0 -
You are getting confused about the terminology.
When you apply for Tax credits, depending on what you put on the form you will be awarded, Working Tax credit (WTC) or Child Tax credit (CTC) or both.
WTC consists of elements such as second adult, lone parent, 30 hr etc
and
CTC consists of elements such as child, young person, family etc...
Child Benefit used to be known as Family Allowance and has been around for years.
You are waiting for your Tax credits to be awarded to you and from what you said in your previous post you should get WTC and CTCThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
The lump sum comes from CTC.
brother had one baby and got just over £120 + CTC on top, we had twins and got £250. + CTC on top0 -
The ‘lump sum’ you are writing about is backdated money as you can back date tax credits by 3 months. Why did not you not claim before now? If you are entitled to Child Tax Credit at a rate higher than the family element then you would have been entitled to the £500 sure start maternity grant (if 1st child) however, this has to be claimed within the first 3 months of having the child.Don't thank me, thank my post :T

When you mentioned your household income as £40,000 were you including your parents. Their income won't be taken into account for Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit

My twins were born on Wednesday. I phoned Thursday ( Day After ) I then got £250, They said it is the Child Element part they pay you as she detailed it all as i wasn't sure £250 for one day was a true value to give me.0 -

Ohhhhhhhhhhh. Are you talking about the Child Trust Fund? In which the government gave you a £250 voucher to start an investment fund for your child?
If so, this was cancelled in January this year. You won't get it.0
