Quotes for new combi boiler

Looking to pick the brains of you in the know about a replacement combi boiler for my two bedroom flat.

First quote is £1500 including VAT for an "Alpha Intec 24X Combi with standard flue and plug in digital timer".

Going to get more quotes anyway but how does this quote look and what are Alpha boilers like as I've never heard of them!

Will post further quotes on here for your advice if you don't mind?

Not even going to tell you what British Gas quoted me. At least !!!!!! Turpin wore a mask when he robbed you!

  • Hi..avoid the Alpha. Recommend a Vaillant EcoTEC Plus or Viessmann Vitodens 100 (both with 5 parts & Labour warranty) but you will pay more.

Remember...a boiler is only as good as its installation and annual servicing...more here.

  • Not heard of 'Alpha'. Doesn't necessarily mean they are bad, though.

The Company appears to have been in existence since the late 60s, so I'm surprised I have never heard of them.

    Do they offer any warranty?

I'm not sure as the guy turned up before he was meant to so I missed him hence didn't get the full details. Back to ringing round for quotes! Grrr.

    Hey Marty82,

You should get at least 3 quotes before you make up your mind, i agree with Canucklehead though, I'd go for a Vaillant. I've had one for years and it's not let me down yet. The cheapest isn't always the best option... Best of luck!

    Hey guys,

    Thanks all,

Had someone round today who has quoted £2200 for an Alpha, yet again, with an 8 year warranty. The quote was just in person so awaiting the email conformation with the full details. Was a local company who can do it next week. Also got Carillion visiting next week who have said over the phone it will be about £1800,

You've all got me worrying about an Alpha and wanting a Valliant but I guess they cost more? Not sure if I can afford one as am currently off work on ESA so very little money (about £400 a month) at the moment. Not sure how I can afford any boiler to be honest!

Alpha are an ok boiler, but you need the 8/10 year warranty they give, as their parts are about 3 times the cost of most other boiler makes.

A good budget boiler with no frills and only a 2 year warranty is the Potterton Gold. Little bit noisier than most, but otherwise ok.

    Hey guys,

The local company has emailed me a quote but it is rather sparse; no mention of VAT, powerflush etc although I texted the guy to ask about this and he has confirmed they are included. The offers were £1500 for an Alpha 28kw (8 year warranty) or £2200 for an Alpha 30kw (3 year warranty).

Also had Carillion round who warned me off Alpha and were surprised at the Alpha quote being so cheap as they said they would have to install a new flue which would require scaffolding as I'm on the second floor. I asked the local company about the Alpha installation and they said they would use the existing flue, from my Vokera, so wouldn't need scaffolding. Should this worry me?

Anyway, Carillion have proposed a Baxi Duo-Tec for £2200 plus scaffolding cost which they are due to confirm but think will be about £200. Any thoughts on this boiler and this quote?

The local company has been calling and texting a lot saying they can do the job ASAP etc which seems a little desperate to me!

    Thanks in advance all!

As said, forget the local company instantly now!

Unless they meant they would use the existing flue hole and NOT the Vokera flue.
