Faulty Router - SOGA query

Hi, I am wondering in order to use sale of goods act, do you need to have full proof of purchase.

Just my netgear router just became faulty all of a sudden and netgear want proof of purchase before doing anything.

If that is the case its not the end of the world.

If you are going through Netgear, then it's under the manufacturer's warranty and they can stipulate whatever they like (providing it's not unlawful!). So to ask to get a proof of purchase is fine.

The SoGA is against the retailer. But even then, you need some form of proof of purchase.

  • Most retailers will accept a bank/credit card statement as proof of purchase, that is if you paid with card. If you paid with cash you will have a harder job.

Like many people I have old routers kicking around (one of them netgear) because a change of supplier meant a dedicated router was included in the package. Just a thought :)

You used to be able to get ex-Sky DG834GTs off eBay for not a lot. These could be recovered to standard then flashed with whatever firmware you liked. (I use one, and have for over 3 years now. I use DGTeam firmware).

Note: if yours is a DG834xx model then it might have suffered the capacitor failure issue. If yes then replacing the capacitors usually fixes the problem. :)

If you purchased online you must have a cc bill showing the transaction

It's likely the router UKOnline provided as part of the contract. For the cost it's really not worth the effort trying to get it fixed or replaced by a non-existent company. :)
