selling empty boxes on Ebay

why do empty boxes sell for between £10-£15 for phones ect on Ebay

going by the price on completed listings, i could sell the box for my kindle and a few mobile phone boxes for a total of around £50

buy why do people buy them?

whatever the reason, i'm off to list some that i have cluttering up the place, and before anyone says it, i will make it very obvious that they are empty, i don't intend to deceive anyone

  • I guess to make their second hand items sell for more, that way they can say in original packaging, or maybe they're collectors, we'll never know!!!

First thing that springs to my mind is that a scum bag thief might have a need for a box to put their expensive stolen products in to sell back on ebay?
  • And welcome to MSE!!! :D
  • Some items, notably photographic equipment, although others things like mobile phones etc as well - sell for quite a bit more if in original packaging- so it can be worth a seller's while to source original packaging for such items as buyers seem to rate getting the goods in their "original" packaging.
  • Some people advertise these in the hope that someone has misread and over bids thinking they will be getting the phone too, this tends to appear quite a lot during the xmas break!
  • Wait until you see how much empty boxes for watches can go for!

  • boxes from places like links of london sell very well, my GF has about 6 boxes and bags she could sell and prob make around £100.

the reason - Scammers can get the boxes and put fake goods in them and sell them for alot more than its worth.

One of the auction houses I go to sells lots of 'designer' named boxes but always warns punters not to try selling them on ebay as they will end up as yet another statistic of suspended sellers.

Just check out the number of (fake mostly) Pandora boxes on eBay. To put all the (fake) Pandora braceletes in.

  • if i had a phone i wanted to sell and had chucked the box, i might be tempted to buy a box as selling it with one wld make a better present to someone. (not that this applies to me as i still use a brick of a nokia from abt 15 yrs ago). i guess scammers or thieves wld think the same, but that's not to say all buyers of such objects are either.

ps i have a load of designer carrier bags in my garage (given to me - i never bought nuffin!) and i wonder if they'd sell?
