Are O2 still doing loyalty discounts?

I have been with O2 (then called BT Cellnet) since 2000 always on a PAYG basis and now I am on the £9.50 PAYG simplicity package with a basic phone.

However now I want to get a smartphone with a not too expensive contract. I got a £60 voucher from them about 5 years ago as a thank you for being a loyal customer, my question is, are O2 still doing discounts/vouchers for long term customers - or do I have to push them for it?

I can only get O2 or Vodafone as signals for other networks are poor in my area but I don't mind switching to Vodafone for the cheapest deal.

Tesco uses O2, worth a look
  • They do £50 vouchers for upgrades and thats about it really.
  • Really hope somebody can help.

I've been a customer of O2 right back to when they were BT Genie/Cellnet etc so around 12 years. I've consistenly upgraded with them and am eligible to upgrade now.

I was given a 40% loyalty discount back in December 2008 - part way through that contract due to a couple of mishaps on O2's part. This I understood was a permanent discount due to my long term loyalty and the troubles I'd experienced, great. I came to upgrade back in April 2010 to an Apple Iphone 3GS and was told in the shop that my discount would be removed as no discounts were offered on Apple contracts. I disputed this and she said I'd need to call the contact centre. I did and they reaffirmed it was a permanent discount and would remain. I asked for it in writing - as far as I was aware I did. Low and behold the discount was still in place on my new contract. However this time when I contacted the call centre to enquire about upgrading they have now said I would lose my discount. Again, I ask why and they now say that was part of my contract agreement and when doing a new one this would be renegotiated but in this instance would be removed? I asked why when I had it confirmed it was a loyalty discount that would remain on the account regardless of upgrading. They put me through to Customer Services, they again said yes it would be removed.
I explained further that this discount has been in place since December 2008 so obviously isn't a part of my contract and had been left on last time when I upgraded. O2 just kept offering different excuses almost like they are doing their utmost to remove such a discount. When I look on my contract details online there is no end date on my discount and surely this should remain. They can't offer something and now say it will be removed on renewal of contract (assuming I will renew)? What also makes me jubious is that they said this would happen last time I upgraded yet it remained on my account?

Can anyone shed any light now on these so called Loyalty Discounts and where I stand. The only letter I can find is the normal terms and conditions letter that is sent when you do take out a new contract and that stipulates the discount is valid for the term of the contract. Yet I have had this for 4 years!

    Please help.

    Thanks - Jen
  • Hey, I'm exactly on the same boat. I got the 40% subscription discount in 2008. when I went to upgrade in 2010 I was told that it was a one off, after a bit of pushing I managed to get it again. I went to upgrade again this morning and the girl on the phone had never heard of such a thing and wouldn't put me through to discuss it with anyone higher up. Has anyone else faced this problem and what was the outcome.
At the moment if they don't continue my discount I'll have to pay more £ a month and get less minutes and texts, which I won't have and will leave O2

Is this different to the 10% on top ups, that you get back each month?
I think this has been going on for some years. I'd simply ask O2 how much £'s you have, to use against a new purchase.
  • Yeah this is different, this is on pay monthly not pay as you go
  • Just thought I would give you guys an update on my earlier post. I reluctantly upgraded with O2 back in May minus my discount. However just the other day a work colleague said she had been offered a loyalty discount weeks before I had upgraded!! I called O2 this morning asking why they told me they had done away with these when clearly they hadn't! Anyway after a lengthy discussion with a lovely CS rep at O2 they came back with a £10 loyalty discount off my monthly rental and they have also backdated it to the beginning of my contract therefore giving me a £30 credit on my account. So in a word they do, still offer loyalty discounts! Hurray!
  • Thanks, that is good news, I haven't renewed my contract yet, I'm just on a month by month basis at the minute so will have to get in touch with o2 and see what I can get from them.

Generealy speaking you have more chance of retaining (or getting) a discount if you want a non Apple device, Apple don;t like discounting as it cheapens the brand and so try it's hard to get anything off an iPhone / iPad contract.

Same way they don;t do sales as such, once a device is superceeded they withdraw the old one, not allow it to be sold off cheaply. The usual exception is the time between a new device being announced and going on sale when they reduce the current device to encourage sales rather than people just waiting for the next version.
