The usual reason is if I'm overtaking several vehicles, or groups of vehicles.
If the gap is a bit big between them, do I move in, then try to get out again?
Do I hang on in the second lane?
If the car I was thinking of overtaking (eventually) speeds up, the gap gets bigger.
If I decide then to move back in, mr undertaker may well be in my space.
No-one who is advocating passing on the left is advocating passing in these circumstances. It's fine to stay out if there's another vehicle coming up shortly in L1 and anyone who deliberately moves over to undertake and then pull out in front of you before the next vehicle should rightly be prosecuted.
Me and Bongles were talking about the situation where there is nothing at all in L1 for a significant distance, has been nothing in L1 for a significant distance but just some MLM blithering along in L2 for mile after mile after mile.
If you were picturing the first scenario for this whole discussion I can see how you'd think we were dangerous drivers.0 -

Got what wrong?
Dithering about moving back in, not checking, or sideswiping the car next to me?0 -
And then there's always karma

Time will tell, as always, though I suspect the real cause of that crash will be due to a bunch of cars driving too close together for the speed they were going, meaning that when one crashed for whatever reason, the rest all piled into it.0

I'm still with karma.
I don't think many people will have a great amount of sympathy with them.
"the executive officer of the Yamaguchi Prefecture Expressway Traffic Police, was quoted by Bloomberg as describing the drivers as “A gathering of narcissists.”"0 -
Still with karma, possibly caused by the driver switching from the right to the left to undertake.

Yep, all them;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Do concentrate - If there was a numpty in lane 1 - then Bongles is still holding back and I'm watching to see what he/she does first.
QUOTE]
Its your concentation that is lacking. If there is a numpty in lane 1 why are you considering an overtake on the left?Or did you miss the point about observing the middle lane numpty before deciding how to safely get past?
No. To clarify there is no middle lane numpty. As we are discussing a 2 lane motorway there is no middle lane. Perhaps you didn't 'observe' that. What I'm holding back for is whether the middle lane numpty notices Bongles go past and reacts. That's how you attempt to predict the actions of other road users, see - by observing them.
All you have observed is that there is someone in a lane, that for no apparent reason, they shouldn't be in. They may seem settled in that lane. Unless you are telepathic or have the gift of second sight you have no idea why they are in that lane, how long they will stay in it or what they will do next.
They may or may not be aware of your presence. At some point it is likely that they will return to the lane they should and are entitled to be in.
It is not likely they would expect to be overtaken on the left as this is not the usual practice. It would be safer for you to assume that such a driver if they were to move to the left, would not check their mirrors or look over their left shoulder for a left lane overtaker before doing so. It is foolhardy to overtake when you believe the driver in front is unaware of your intention without first making an effort to make them aware.
You decide on this basis that it is safe to overtake on the left.
Your biggest danger is that they do move to the left lane as you are passing them. If they do then disaster will surely strike and if they don't this will have nothing to do with your observation.
Your overtaking manoeuvre is not the safest option. All you are is a numpty trusting another numpty not to enter the lane they should be in while you are overtaking them in a lane you shouldn't be overtaking them in. In other words you are trusting to luck.
If you wish to overtake on the left then there is a safer way of doing it than has so far been described by those who practice it.
You need a good reason to ignore the rules of the road and/or breaking the law. Enhancing safety would be one. As I have pointed out in previous posts there is a safer way of overtaking on the left. It is not as safe as overtaking on the right.
On the odd occasions I encounter a lane hogger (rare on 2 lane motorways) I have no difficulty in persuading them to move to the correct lane. All it requires is a little patience, and good planning.0 -

Yep.
And as the post above, do you really want to be next to me, knowing there is no chance of me looking, or indicating?
Do you think I'm in the middle lane because I'm a good driver?0 -

You need to go back Mikey chap and see what I posted earlier, it is so the reverse of what you are assumming as to be un reconcilable.
Methinks I said earlier the guy in the 2nd/middle lane may move at anytime, hence the issue to be aware and fully alert??I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
