If you have been with TPS for five years - have you renewed your registration? Registration only last five years!

It may not stop unwanted international calls but it should stop any unawanted UK marketing calls.

    Hi Cooperation
Got this reply from TPS today

    Dear Sir
You do not need to re-register every five years. Once registered you stay on the file until your tell us otherwise. The only other way for your number to come off the file is if it became inactive, such that you changed telephone numbers.

We can't promise that registration with TPS will stop all unsolicited sales and marketing calls but it will certainly reduce them. As after 28 days you are still receiving this type of call to the telephone number you have registered with TPS, you can take advantage of our free complaint handling service.

To complain about an unsolicited call made to a number registered with TPS please provide us with details of the call by logging a complaint online at www.tpsonline.org.uk and clicking on complaints.

The least information required for us to be able to process a complaint will be the company name and the date of the call. Any additional information i.e. telephone number, name of caller, reason for the call will help us investigate the complaint.

    Kind Regards
    **** ****(name supplied)

I had quite a few of those calls a while ago.
I have an answering machine, and at the end of the day I just delete the "messages", they usually put the phone down when they hear the outgoing message.
Genuine callers leave a message and I can call back or answer the phone if I know they will be calling back.
I had those calls every day for a few weeks, and it's when I was reading this thread that I realised I haven't had them for quite a while.
I suppose they give up at the end.
  • I just wanted to let off some steam!!!! I am getting really tired of unwanted incoming calls, but now I'm getting a persistant international one, saying that they're from Virgin and before they can tell me why they want to speak to me they want me to give them my date of birth!!!!!!!!! I ask them what is the nature of their call and they won't tell me anything as under the data protection act they need my date of birth!!! I have refused to give this information as they could be anyone! Has anybody had the same?

Welcome to the MSE forums punch and judy.

Why not just give Virgin (or whoever it is) a false date of birth? I like the sound of 1/4/1910 myself.

If it's a requirement that your reply must be what they have on record, they can't proceed with the call - and may not call again.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

i've taken up advice to p them off and get some fun out of it now. my grans hard of hearing and i dreaded trying to talk to her on the phone so im using this on them until they cut me off! going "hello, hello, i can't hear you "repeatedly frustrates them. im feeling that im more in power now and new ideas to wind them up would be much appreciated.someone gave me good advice not to hand out my real phone no. to anything and changing my phone no. maybe it'll stop eventually.
  • I just talk to them in a mix of French.English/Spanish

When the line got reactivated, we got exactly the same number as the previous owners of the house... So unfortunately we just get phonecalls directed to Mr Brown (Mr Brown has been dead for 23 years, but hey). We are having so much fun with it. Examples are:

    double glazing
"we dont have any windows, nor doors, we bricked them all up so !!!!!!s like you would not call us anymore"

    secured loans
putting on a weird accent "nah they're dead, nah your not even in the right town, right number, street, I am in manchester/liverpool/scotland... nah I am renting"

you can just ask them what their names are, that you dont believe they are called Tom, get them to tell you where they live

or understand what they say wrongly: "what mate? you got an orange penis, I am no doctor but I sure believe yu should get that checked it sounds serious"

or just repeat whatever they say, just to pee them off

or if you are watching telly, just get them to listen

or treat them as your new best friend and start telling them everything about Start Trek

one of our mates actually used to talk to them a bit, giving false info, and then would take his mobile and play certain clips from Southpark the movie "how would you like to suck on my balls, Mr Garrison?" and repeating it constantly.

lots and lots the possibilities are endless...
