Have you tried what others have suggested - switching everything off?
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

  • Apologies - forgot to address that point. We may have a crack at that this afternoon. Unfortunately with two small children I can't manage it just yet. I'll need to bundle them out of the house so I can concentrate on getting everything switched off properly. I'll report back when I manage to do this.

Faulty meters are relatively rare, although people naturally tend to jump on this hope when they get a big bill.
The chances of getting a second faulty meter are even tinier.

  • We use about 8 kw/h per person per day. So if you are three in the house 24 kw/h sounds normal to me.
  • I agree, I don't think both the meters are faulty.

I suspect something else is amiss, causing the excessive reading.

Our annual consumption is apparently 8600kWh. (about £1000) This is significantly higher than the average family. That's a lot for a household with no electric heating, I feel.

Indeed, it's huge-more than double the average of around 3,500 kWh. Get a sparky in to test the whole system, or start isolating one circuit at a time to narrow it down.

    .

 I'm in most of the time, yet my average is 4.3kwh/day (and out of that, about 1.5kwh is used by the few things that really need to be on 24/7 - most of my appliances are also over 10 years old so not the most efficient)

My DH is an electrician and as i said before, get an electrician in to check your mains, appliances etc especially if your wiring is old.

Just to highlight the inaccuracies of those monitors... Mine consistently reads high, but not by a consistent amount!
For Sept and Oct it reports figures just over 17% higher than the meter readings, but August was 89% higher, with one day in particular showing usage of 26.26 kWh when my meter reported 8kWh.
I trust my meter, but not the monitor. It is a useful indicator to when something has switched on though, or your usage at a particular moment is not what you'd expect it to be.

  • Keen to hear from Verylittlecarrot where all that 20 kWh electricity was going in a day.

Equivalent to 7 hot baths per day; yet bath/shower not electric !!

    Was the meter faulty ?
