I can't get the CD to start it goes right to the message. I've tried to boot through the BIOS but I can't get that to work either.

Shut down the PC --- put your finger on the DELETE key of your keyboard --- start your PC.. this should take you to the BIOS screen.

Change the boot order to read Cd-ROM - Put your Windows XP Cd in and restart your PC !

biddy79uk ,Come back and say how you get on,but it does sound like your hard drive is failing.if you manage to get it back working i would spend money on a new hard drive and see if you can back up your system to that before it goes completely

ive just read in the manual to insert the recovery disk
    and i did so,,,
it done some sort of test PCI SCAN COMPLETE was in it as thats all i saw cos it was so fast
and now i get this message whilst the recovery disk is in
"the file RETTEN.EXE is missing in the original directory,

if the file has been deleted this recovery is not available any more,

if the RETTEN.EXE file has been moved to another directory or drive
you have tostart the recovery manually

then a letter A:\>- the line starts blinking
as if i have to do something

    Is this a Medion PC?

To recover you need to boot from the Application and Support CD, not the Recovery CD. If you have used the recovery CD (a full Windows XP CD) by mistake it's possible that you have deleted the recovery partition.

    yes its a medion PC
i did try to put the main disk in cos i was going to do a full re-install of windows and start from scratch,
but then/when i looked in the manual,
it said to put the app+support disk in,,,BUT when i did i chose option 1 and tthats when it came up with
the RETTEN.EXE file is mising or not in the right directory or drive
if this has been deleted or moved (or summit like that) the recovery isnt available any-more-you will have to do this manually
    then the letter A:\ _ APPEARS i think i have to type something or do summit ime well bamboozled{help}
    THANX (biddy)

If you no longer have an E: Recover partition (check to be doubly sure) then it looks like you've deleted the Recovery stuff.

Have you tried booting from the Recover CD again? Do you not get any further with that?

Hill fly put this on http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=48872&TabID=1&source=1&doy=29m1
There is cheaper ones, internal would be much cheaper, and smaller gb would be cheaper
  • OK you could try a LIVE CD version of LINUX. KNOPPIX is good and will read your hard disks and you might be able to back up some of your data.

It sounds like a hard disk crash to me. Unfortunatly if this is true then you will need to buy and install a new hard drive and re-install windows from the ORIGINAL CD.
