Sky £2.42 more then Orange, would you?

I want unlimited broadband and I want anytime calls. Ideally from the same provider. Since I'm paying an arm and a leg (£45) with BT at the minute anywhere would be cheaper.

I've worked out that using Orange would cost me £17.75 a month averaged over the year (including using all possible deals).

Sky would come in at £20.17, which is £2.42 more than Orange a month

But...

I'm leaning towards Sky and paying that bit more (£29.04 a year more) because Orange gets such a slating online.

What would you do? Are Sky £2.42 a month better than Orange?

  • From what I read, Sky users would probably say yes to your direct question.

However: that's Sky's "LLU" service which depends on them having a presence at your local exchange which means you connect to their network.

If they do not, you simply get a resold BT Wholesale service (called "Connect") which is very poorly rated. You can check on the Samknows website > Availability checker > LLU xDSL results > Sky/Easynet availability

The following services are available in your location:
    • BT Wholesale ADSL
    • BT Wholesale ADSL Max
    • TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
    • Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU
That means I get proper Sky rather than BT in disguise?
  • It does indeed :-)

Well worth the extra £30pa.-or ask them to match the Orange price, or throw in an equivalent sweetener to that value.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Where do you get £20.17 from?

Sky BB unlimited is £7.50 /month for TV subscribers, £10 if you are not.
Line Rental 12.25 /month or £119.40 for 12 months up front.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • I'm not sure now Penrhyn, I didn't keep a note. I came to those figures taking account of deals, cashback sites, start up costs averaged over the contract period and so on. By the time I was done I was pretty sure I was as accurate as I could be. Sorry I can't be more help.

Bear in mind I am also talking about line rental and unlimited any time calls, not just broadband.

Thanks for the heads up, i think the unlimited calls are £5/ month extra.

  • I've used both, and I prefer Sky.

I also have a friend who works for Orange, gets their broadband FOR FREE, and curses the fact that he took them up on the offer. He'd rather pay to have a connection that isn't run by buffoons, but he can't.
  • Penrhyn do you work for Sky? You've ignored line rental, connection charges and cashback discounts via Quidco, all of which I have mentioned. Fivers and Tenners make for good PR but as with many things, when you get to the small print it's not quite the whole story.

No I don't, I am a customer with unlimited broadband talk free and line rental.
I quoted monthly line rental cost in post 3 with the 12 month alternative.

Yes I did ignore Quido and other special offers.
Having a look there is a 6month half price deal atm for standalone BB and talk + line rental.

Yes I did ignore set up charges.

At the end of the day its up to you, Orange who use BT's infratructure, or Sky who have their own infrastructure.
