If you can afford to, either give it to her! That's what I did with my previous car (gave it to a friend). I told him it was working perfectly but carried no guarantee it would last.

Its not 5 years later and the car is doing him well.

If you can't afford to give it to her outright, you could come up with something like 'if its still working in a year and you've had no major bills give me £4k. If you've had a major bill knock it off the price'. You might want to exclude tyres and servicing?

We paid £16k, plus £800 insurance which still leaves us with £17k. In all honesty, the Passat was a great car, but after 40 months a bit boring. It was stock from a company that’s in liquidation.

We’ll be keeping this at least 2 years, possibly anything upto 4, so it’s a reasonable long term investment. Looks great, too.

Yep. I definitely think I know the reason your business ended up in the crap...

Not my own company in liquidation. The reason why what happened, happened was because we bought a second company with severe problems, which has starting to pull credit. If they went, the probability would have been we’d have gone with them.

It’s a car worth about £27k, I’ve paid a damn sight less than that, what’s the big deal over what we drive? I’m adamant that I’m not going to get back into the situation I was in, so can we please leave this be! I haven’t taken out any finance and am taking last years dividend in January, which shall be a 5-figure sum off the mortgage, with emergency extras left to spare. I want the easy-access pot at £30,000, (1 months company t/o just incase) and this will do it!

The main question was regarding what to do with the Passat (which would have been replaced next year anyway). She’s running a ‘W’ Focus, which has almost run its course. It’s old, starting to look scruffy and will need a LOT of money to get through the MoT. I’m taking the conditional fee offer (thanks for that, one I hadn’t thought of) to say if it’s running in 18 months, pay us then.

  • You've asked her for £4000 for the Passat?! Don't you like your mother?

I've seen 06/07 ones with HALF that mileage for that price.

Plus the DSG box is crap and unreliable once out of warranty. Plus the front suspension problems. Plus the electric parking brake. Plus the elctric steering lock. Jeez.

I'd tell her to keep the Focus. When it brakes, it'll cost peanuts to fix.

Definitely avoid selling to her - too much baggage. Sell the car to whoever and use the little white lie that the engine went pop.

  • Been there - Done that!

    Don't do it!

No matter how many problems you may advise the car has, they will all come back & bite you!

My philosophy is 'never, ever, lend money or sell cars to friends and family'
