£10k to invest in Ebay business...but what?

Hello all, last week I left my job ( not planned), I have £10k savings to invest in stock/goods as I would like to make a living working from home and selling on ebay (wouldnt we all I hear you say). In the past 3 years I have had over 500 sales on ebay, selling what ever I could get my hands on, however this was hit and miss as the stock I have got my hands on is not very consistant.
Does anyone have any ideas for stock? In an ideal world my ideal situation would be to pop off to the airport fly to a country in Europe fill up my suitcase with stock (legal stock of course) bring it back and sell on ebay, then the same the following month.
Would love to hear from anyone who is making a living from ebay as proof it can be done! Thanks in advance

No-one can really give you ideas - you need to find a niche - a supply, and a demand. Making a living on ebay can be done, but people doing it aren't likely to jeapordise (sp?) their own business by telling you what they sell.

    Good luck!

Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

Your question is a commonly asked one and not one I feel you'll get any real reply to.

£10.000 is not a lot if you are looking to sell direct from reputable companies, which leaves you trying to compete on grey markets with all the other sellers. If you aer bringing goods in from abroad for business purposes your duty and taxes may be quite heavy, and what with ebay fees etc it might be very difficult to turn a profit.

Really the only way to do it is to find a niche market, maybe work on from a hobby or interest you have. If you have a niche market alway sbe prepared to move on it quickly as once others see what you are selling they will copy you so you need to be one step ahead at all times.

Trying to find a niche in todays age is not easy, but can be done.

I allways believe the best way to sell anything, is to sell what you know & what interests you. Like soolin said, hobbies something like that.

That way you wont have to learn about new areas, quicker to set up. Plus it will hold your interest a lot longer, nothing worse than working with something you dont know or like.

    Ok...

    Deep breaths

If anyone here is a world breaking money spinning plan they won't tell you. If you want the profit- you have to do the research, the planning, the hard work- and then you'll get profit

£10,000 is reasonable, if, and only if you find urself a market otherwise untouched by other users

Isn't what you seem to be describing called smuggling?

Anything you bring into the UK must be for your own use only.

For saying that you intend to make a living off ebay, you seem to be far too vague.
  • hi... no one is going to tell your what's hot and what not in the ebay world..... plus there are trends.... fads .....seasonal goods etc......

some good advice is..... what interest you..... hobby wise..... etc... so you have the genuine interest and product knowledge about what you are selling....

if you have no interest or hobbies that you could potentially turn into a business.....

why dont you spend some time looking through various catagories on ebay......and see what you think.....

also when choosing what to sell on ebay..... you get your quiet times as well..... with all businesses..... so you may have to consider other outlets.....or other ways of selling your stock........markets..... other websites etc.....

and another thought...... £10k is it going to be money well spent on stock for ebay....?.....

dont get me wrong..... any business is a gamble what ever you sell or do..

good luck..............hope you find what your looking for....
Work to live= not live to work
  • Don't gamble more than you can afford to lose. Test the water first after some extensive research. Don't rush into it. And finally, don't forget "good customer service" is a must.

you need to be lucky and get into a booming market at the right time, last year star wars lego figures were going for stupid money, so i was buying them in boxs from a local 'discount store' taking them out of the box and selling the characters seperately, cost per box 2-3 quid making 5-10 Profit on each box, not massive income but still made about 1000 over a couple of months, until the stock ran dry!
quite funny the lady in the shop used to give me a funny look each time a grown man went in and bought 10 - 15 boxs of the same lego each time!
