All well and good assuming you have the money to pay...

At £150 recovery fee for just being recovered from the motorway, recovery costs can add up. What about if you need your car transporting home? At £1.50 to £2 per mile, it can cost £100's.

You don't need to have the cash, the breakdown vehicle they send will accept credit cards. I've only broken down once and had to call out Autoaid, but I paid the driver by card and actually had a cheque from Autoaid 2 weeks before the card had to be paid off.
  • Another vote for AutoAid - the only time I've had to use them, I was in the same situation as bap98189, received the cheque before the card needed paying.

The other good thing about them, they cover you and spouse in any car. So if, say, you've borrowed a friend's car and break down, you can still call them.
  • Great advice, I'll be looking more into this sounds a good deal!
  • I've got a copy of the Which breakdown survey if it is at all helpful :). Is uploading it against the rules?

It might work out cheaper to look into bank accounts that provide the cover as a benefit.

Me and my partner have a joint Natwest Gold Account. It costs £12.95 per month (£155.40 annually) but includes Green Flag recovery (roadside, homestart and recovery to home or garage of your choice up to 10 miles) for any car registered in our names. £155.40 is expensive just for the greenflag cover but when you consider the account also gives mobile phone insurance (including iPhones) for our 2 phones, annual travel insurance, identity theft protection, accidental death insurance, extended warranty insurance it works out much cheaper than us having seperate policies for travel, phones and car recovery.

I have called out GreenFlag once for a homestart and had no problems with them, they arrived within 15 minutes. The actual guy that turned up was from a local recovery company contracted by GreenFlag because GreenFlags own fleet is much smaller than AA/RAC they contract work to other local firms.

You probably havent got a Toyota, but if you had, you can get club Toyota membership for £65 a year which gives you full AA cover - roadside, recovery, home start, european etc.

  • I have been with Auto Aid for about 5 years now...have had to call them out once and it was all seamless. I paid around £45 on card and as above, was paid back within a matter of days.
