so muddled and confused if anyone can help please.

good evening all :)
i will try and make this as short as possible.
it is looking extremely likely that myself and my husband will be parting.
im on dla high mobility and middle care, incapacity benefit.
i also get child tax credit and child benefit,LHA and council tax benefit.
my husband claims carers allowance and is the named driver on the motabilty car as i dont drive.
my questions are,as the carers allowance would go and the car would sit on the drive for the next 2 and a half years not being driven but being paid for,am i able to claim income support or anything else ?
also i have a 3 year old that i wouldnt be able to get to and from school so is there any help available for this-either home education or something else ?
all this is worrying the life out of me as i have 2 children to support.
thankyou.

I would urge you to speak with Motability to see if there is any possibility of you ending the contract with them early. If they will agree to it then this would of course help you financially.

Unfortunately I can't help with anything else, but I'm sure someone will come along shortly to help you :o)
  • you could claim income support as a lone parent and this could include a disability premium.
  • thankyou for your replies.i have already rung motability and they said no unfortunately and said i have to get another named driver but there is noone that can do it so the car will have to just sit there.i will apply for income support when it happens.please could you tell me what the disability premium is?
  • for income support there is a standard weekly allowance (67.50). then you get 'premiums' added onto that allowance if you fall into certain groups. it is basically extra money per week if you qualify. if you get middle rate care, live alone and no one claims carers allowance for you, your premium would be 55.30 per week 'severe disability premium' in addition to a 'standard' disability premim of 28.85 per week. not knowing your full circumstances - you would probably get the lone parent premium as well (20.20) and if you have a child under 1 (10.50)

so you would have a total weekly amount of entitlement to income support dependant on your circumstances. lets say it all adds up to 180 per week. if your incapcity benefit pays you say, 120 per week, you would only get the difference in income support (so 60 for example.)

    hope that makes sense.
  • it does make sense, thankyou very much.is child tax credit and child benefit taken into account when working it out do you know?
  • no the calculation ignores that. try putting your details into http://www.entitledto.co.uk
  • ok,thankyou very very much for your help.

I am extremely surprised at this response from Motabilty, it would be worth another call to them (get a different operator) or a letter to them explaining your situation.
  • I agree speak to mobility again. My dad gets DLA and Mum was his named driver as he couldnt drive. Mum got ill herself and she had her licence revoked so the car was useless (same as yours will be) and they allowed him to end the contract early. You need to speak to someone else or get CAB to call for you

I'm surprised at Motability as well. In April this year my friend and her husband seperated and he was the (only) named driver and my friend doesn't drive. My friend went to the Motability dealer where she got the car from and they gave her a number to ring. She rang them and they finished the agreement early. It took about 6 weeks for the car to be collected.
