virgin contract problem!

hi guys im hoping somone might be able to give me some advice, basically i had the full virgin package and was well over my 12 month contract and decided to put the package down as i couldnt afford £80 odd a month anymore and was making cut backs anyway, so my wife phoned, had it reduced to £60 but what we didnt know was they put us in a new 12 month contract.
now i phoned the other day to cancel completely as we wanted to go with sky and they said its not poss as were right in the middle of our contract!
i didnt know this and the virgin man told me its standard to put people in new 12 month contracts every time they change theyre package?
is this true and is there anyway i can get out of it, i didnt know i'd been put in the contract and they say theres no way ot unless i pay it off early!
