dvd writing doesn't work natively in xp, you need extra software, download imgburn, it's free, and you'll probably be able to write dvd's.

£300-400 buys a laptop good enough for your needs, start by going into shops and trying them out.

machines are never obsolete in 2 years, buying top of the range is wasteful.

Thanks very much. will try imgburn later. Good news that I could get away with spending £300 -£400. I tend to be a buy the best you can as it iis worth it in the longrun sort of girl so the tendancy is to spend more than I might need to.

Untick the option to install Google Chrome and to allow Google to take over your Home Page whilst installing ImgBurn.

Well! Thanks all of you for your help and advice. You are a wondeful bunch on this Forum.

I went to look today at replacing PC and went to a local small firm who came recommeded by a few friends as helpful and knowledgable.

I am now looking at several boxes -

An Acer Aspire 5750-2416G50Mnbb laptop - online reviews seem favourable on the whole. Has Intel HD 3000 graphics card
    An Epson SX130 combined printer/copier/fax
    A 1TB Prestige hard drive
Threw in extra wired mouse to carry with me and a keyboard to plug in if I prefer to use that.

They told me that much as they would love to sell me a wireless router, I should ring Orange and get one off them for free. Have just done this and one is on its way to me.

They told me that the preloaded Norton and McAfee can be removed and suggested free download of AVG and Windows own Firewall were all I needed.

    £620 in total

I know you may well say i could have got it cheaper by shopping around but feel happier having bought from one place and they will give me any advice/help I need to get stuff up and running. Nice group of lads.

Have you actually purchased these products? What were the individual prices?

Knowledgeable and they suggested AVG? :) They told you that both Norton and McAfee were preloaded??

Was the hard drive the old USB 2.0 version or the newer USB 3.0?

    Yes, have got them
3 month trial of McAfee and they suggested delete it and use AVG
Norton not on, just an online help facility
    The HD is USB 2.00
