Look on eBay and see if the same editions are for sale or have been recently sold. Amazon do have some older titles, but I think the asking prices are optimistic. Also if there is an antiquarian bookshop nearby go in and see what they would offer.

Finally 19th century books aren't necessarily "valuable", it will depend on author, title, rarity, desirability and condition.

Saw Zapper on Dragons Den last month so thgought I would have a look to see how it compared with other sites. My advice is to shop around. Webuybooks website is definitely worth a visit. Also, they transfer money straight into your account or send cheque whichever you prefer.
  • Hi, I spent two hours yesterday putting books and CD's into their system and accepting their offer only to find at the final stages of the operation a notice on their site to say they were inundated and could not take any further items from potential sellers. It would have been nice to have had that notice up front before wasting two hours of my time.
    Be careful with this site.

    :(
  • Lets face it if you have the time and patience go for eBay!! It will give you best return. If however you want quick and not totally ludicrous price go for Magpie. Worst is Zapper!! May as well give away....
  • I've not actually used it because every book I seem to put in their not interested in. I tried 15 books of different types from paperback novels to music books and it only accepted 2 of them offering a total of 50p for both. CDs they tend to offer a little less than musicmagpie (I know, hard to believe anyone could offer less?) so I've never got passed go with them.

Well... In contemplating Zapper I decided to complete an online search. One of the items that came up was an appearance the owner of Zapper made on "Dragons Den"....

He was after £250,000 for a 7.5% stake in his company. In the end he got all the cash but had to give up 30% of the company.

Now... What he said that struck me was "Here is a pile of books, DVD's & CD's. We will pay the customer £25 for it, but the onward retail value is £250"

Now, to me that is not amazingly good value...

Does anyone know where the likes of Zapper sell their bought in stock../
